Favourite things 2

Everytime we go to the UK, one place I have to visit is Lakeland Plastics.  It's such a neat store full of useful things for the home and of course it's in the Lake District.  Prior to our visit, we had arranged to have a get together at Christmas a group of us.  One of the things we had decided upon was to have a gift exchange where we had to buy one of our favourite things no more than $10 each and then give it to each one of the participants at the party.  I knew exactly what I was going to get and it was something I was going to buy anyway.

So off I went to Lakeland to get everyone some "Cover Mate's."  They are like a shower cap for bowls.  I use them instead of using cling/saran wrap.  The covers are washable and reusable.  I love them and use them daily.  You can buy them also from Amazon, but they are a lot more expensive there for some reason?  Anyway, if you can find them they are worth while.  A word of caution though buying the cheap versions on Amazon won't be worth the money.....been there done that!!  May as well have just given the money to a charity than buy the cheap ones.

One thing I make regularly is a garden salad.  I generally put the following in a garden salad.  Lettuce, sweet pepper, cucumber, radishes, tomatoes, red onion.  Sometimes peas and sometimes raw mushrooms.
This large bowl lasts two to three days.  Of course I use my plastic bowl cover instead of plastic wrap to cover the bowl.

What do you put in your salad?

I love those. I had a few and used them until they fell apart
I might have to look out for more. As you said. The cheap ones just don’t last long at all

If I ever stay overnight somewhere where there's a complimentary shower cap, I always bring it home to cover my bowls! Not that I have stayed anywhere much since covid... I buy a big bag of mixed seeds and grains from the health shop and sometimes sprinkle a spoonful over my salad to give a different texture. Or chopped herbs from my garden.

Something green, preferably leaf lettuce or Romaine, though this is not important. Tomatoes, shredded Cheddar cheese, mushrooms, shredded carrots, chicken breast. Tommy likes something green, red or green bell peppers, cucumber, shredded carrots, onions. chicken or ham or beef. Usually, there is something else in the refrigerator. We each make our own salads because I would die if cucumbers touched my salad. He hates mushrooms.

I forgot to say that my mother had those plastic covers in the early 50s.

I love Lakeland (I don't think it has been 'Plastics' in the UK for quite a long time.
I'm lucky enough to have a Lakeland shop in town and it's one of my favourite places to visit.

I love salads and put in whatever is available. I just had one for lunch and had iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber pickle, avocado, cheese and walnuts in it. Sometimes I add in some sort of canned fish or pan fried chicken/meat. I also like to use bell peppers, cucumbers, roasted peppers. I occasionally use onions because sometimes raw onions bother my stomach. I make big salads as meals rather than small side salads.

Your salad looks delicious. I don't like mushrooms so I don't use them but anything else is fair game. I notice you peeled your radishes. I have never done that and we eat a lot of radishes in the summer. Isn't it funny how people learn to do things differently?

My favourite is spinach salad.
I bought some reusable covers made from material, and you iron in beeswax. No plastic at all!

I tend to favour sales that don't involve lettuce, so a carrot salad, for instance.

We like to stack things in our fridge so we have a bunch of the glass bowls with plastic lids. We discovered that we can get replacement lids at Canadian Tire so we've used the same bowls for years and just get lids as we need them. (think ours are made by Anchor, but not 100% sure).
Our salads generally include pretty much the same as yours only we top ours sometimes with pumpkin seeds and/or sunflower seeds. We also love putting a few dried onions on top. We make our own dressings too - onion or ranch.

I love those salad shower caps! And as for my salads -- I love just about anything that can go on them!

I love a mooch round Lakeland, haven't been for a while though.
Your salad looks lovely although, I would leave out the cucumber as I don't like it and might add sweetcorn and perhaps grated carrot and beetroot. Hubby doesn't like anything that resembles a salad so I usually buy the bagged salad from the supermarket and add to it.

It is funny you writing about the "shower caps", I was telling Hubby about them as I was putting plastic wrap on a bowl when preparing dinner and he had never heard of them. Did not now they existed.

Salad, much the same as you, plus pretty much any raw veg in the fridge, celery, cauliflower and broccoli cut up in small flowerets and shredded carrot .

They look very useful. I enjoy a good salad and have used the same kind of ingredients in ours. I add a few nuts too. Fortunately, I have no allergies. I would love to explore the Lake District more. It is such a beautiful area.

I have a deep lidded tupperware/rubbermaid type container that I put salad in. Works great. My salads usually contain lettuce, green onion, radish, cucumber, tomatoes, and perhaps cheese.

I also make a marinated salad that is broccoli, onion, cauliflower and sliced olives.

God bless.

Any leftover veggie, cooked or raw, has been found in our salads, but cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, and peppers are always included in ours at home.
I wish I had some of those plastic bowl covers.

I really miss Lakeland too! Always popped in when I was on the high street. You are making me miss England even more. I've not visited since I left almost 13 years ago (!).

I have no rules for salad - everything and anything in them!!
