Hubby and I were talking about smoking the other day. Neither of us have ever smoked. We had no idea about the price of cigarettes. I saw a couple of guys smoking by my car the other day when I came out of the grocery store. So I asked them the price of a pack of cigarettes. The one guy said up to $22 CDN per package. I think he said there are 25 cigarettes per package.
So if you smoke a pack a day, it will cost you up to $8,000 CDN per year. 🤯
If you go to the coffee shop every day for a coffee. Here a medium coffee at Tim Hortons is around $1.90, if you go to Starbucks closer to $3. You buy a coffee say five days a week, you could spend at least $500 a year.
For a couple to eat out at a chain restaurant, you will on average spend $50 on a meal. I am basing that on us going to Boston Pizza, each of us having an entree, hubby having a soda and me having water. Yes with tip that will cost us $50 CDN. Even if you only go out twice a month that's $1,200 CDN a year.
Even going to MacDonalds, you will spend $25 CDN for a couple no problem.
A lot of people think that a couple of dollars spent on a coffee now and then doesn't seem a lot, but it soon adds up.

ALl those things add up to a quite horrifying amount even over a month, let alone a year or a decade. I'm glad I never started any of them as a habit. I have the occasional coffee out but never smoke and rarely get take aways. It's nice to think of the money saved, isn't it?
xx
I have never smoked either. I cannot imagine how I would have made it during tight times in the past if I had smoked. A church food bank had a sign--If you can afford to smoke, you can afford food. I knew the person who ran it and often donated things. The guy said no one smokes in their facility, but they could smell it on their clothing and hair.
So true!
That is a lot of money going up in smoke. We had a few early morning appointments & thought once we could eat, we'd grab a egg muffin thing & tea at the McDonalds next door - $18.49. I was glad the medical centre was next door as I just about fainted! We don't smoke (thankfully neither of us ever did) & we don't eat out, especially since the pandemic.
I agree, and I had NO idea how much cigarettes were! That's a pricey addiction. We used to go out to eat more often (but probably not as often as most) but in the last several years, we hardly ever do, usually it is with friends who want to go out for dinner somewhere. The same with coffee, I rarely, if ever get a coffee outside of my own home. -Jenn
I often wonder if the people who do these things ever sit and figure out how much they spend in a year and I seriously doubt it. Luckily we don't smoke (DH did years ago) and only go out about once a month and then only for breakfast which is far cheaper. We don't buy coffee out unless we happen to be going somewhere and then we might (key word) stop and get an iced coffee. That might happen only a few times a year.
I did not know how much cigarettes cost either, wow! that is a lot of many over a year. I don't and never have smoked. I eat out once in awhile and seldom get a coffee.
It upset me when I volunteered at a Christmas food bank, families would come in for assistance over the holidays. People would have a large T.H coffee in their hand, smelled of smoke and chatting on their cell phone all the time.
Thankfully the only vice I don't have is cigarettes.
I too just found out a pack of cigarettes and a carton over $100USD.
I about flipped when she told me this. I'd rather have gin. LOL
Here in Saskatchewan a premium brand of cigarettes cost $27.00 and the only reason I know this is a friend of mine still smokes. Crazy to spend that much money, she says she only smokes a pack a week, but still it is crazy.
God bless.
It sure does add up. We've cut way back on eating out (something we did every weekend). I'm just shocked by restaurant prices lately and everyone expects a tip too - even when you just go pick up your carry out order. Crazy!
I cannot believe the cost of a pack of cigarettes! I remember being shocked years ago when my sister asked me to pick up a pack for her and it cost over $5!!!!!
I used to buy a coffee 3 mornings a week when I go into the office but I now limit myself to 1 day and it comes out of my monthly allowance. I don't eat "fast food" - I do eat out very occasionally these days - not the couple of times a week I used to think nothing of. Now I think about all the food in my pantry and freezer and just can't justify it!
I have cut back on eating out and when I do eat out it's usually lunch so a salad or soup and a sandwich. The worst shock to me was the price of a glass of wine in a restaurant - anywhere from $8 to $13! That's as much or more than I pay for a bottle of a fairly decent wine. Now I stick with water.
