Cheats Version of Cabbage Rolls

I have been making this dish for years, its like cabbage rolls, but a lot easier. I have entered this recipe in a competition.

Ingredients:

1 lb lean ground beef
1 onion chopped
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1 cup long grain rice
1 can tomato soup (condensed)
1 can mushroom soup (condensed)
1 soup can water
3 cups cabbage, shredded

Shred cabbage and place in a large dish. I use a large lasagna dish, and use around 1/4 cabbage.

Fry Meat and drain off fat.

Add onion, salt, pepper and rice, stir.

Add soups and water, mix well.

Pour meat and soup mixture over the top of the cabbage. DO NOT STIR!!!

Cover pan with aluminum foil, and bake in a preheated 350 oF oven for around 2 hours.

It is yummy and so simple to make.

Looks good! I'm going to have to try that one.

Does it freeze well? Like in being made ahead?

Oh that looks good. I have everything but the cabbage - I guess red cabbage wouldn't look as nice huh?

Stephanie, I have never frozen this........my only thought would be, the cabbage may end up overly watery?

Kim, as long as you like red cabbage, I don't see it being a problem making it with this. Is red cabbage more bitter, as if it is that would affect the flavour?

I think you can freeze it. After cooking then freezing the cabbage will be even more soft than it was, but you won't get any more water out of it because of the baking process. I freeze cabbage (fresh & frozen) all the time.

I think I could make this one! I've never made cabbage rolls because they seem labour intensive and you probably know from my blog that I'm a lazy cook :)

Now, the last time my mom visited she saw the larger-than-basketball-sized cabbages in the store and said she absolutely had to make cabbage rolls with those beautiful cabbages. She put her back out making enough cabbages for about 30 people. (Seriously, she had severe spasms the rest of her visit and spent most of that time on the couch with a bottle of Robax nearby.) We had 12 to dinner, three took home hearty helpings of leftovers, I froze a meal for the family and we ate cabbage rolls for lunch & dinner for a few days!

OH, and we learned: big cabbages are not good for making cabbage rolls.

Me, I think I'll use this recipe instead! Thanks for posting it!

You obviously have air conditioning as there is no way that I will turn my oven on for 2 hours! LOL. The recipes looks great though... will definitely give it a try when its cooler around here. It was still 34 degrees at 7pm last night... supposed to be a tad hotter today. There is no way I'm cooking in this house!

I'll have to try this out and see if I can get my picky 6 year old to eat it, LOL! Looks good and easy to make.

You ought to write a cookery book.

I made this and it was really good! However, we didn't have two hours to kill so I boiled the rice until it was al dente, added the cabbage for about 5 minutes, strained it all and put it in the dish. I covered it with the meat sauce and put it in the oven for 25 mins and it was delicious! Thanks for the recipe!
