For those over a certain age and especially is you're British born, you will remember Hilda and her Murial in Coronation Street?

Well when we go to the doctors we go through a town with this "murial" and I always think of Hilda.......this one is much prettier though!

Had a good cry on Tuesday......

was glad I was on my own.  

Now why was I crying..............you're going to think I am daft but I was watching Coronation Street and it was the episodes where Sinead dies.

I am well aware that this is not "real" but have to say it was well written this story line and the actors portrayed the situation so well.  I have been watching Coronation Street for years, and despite having a love and hate relationship with it, I always keep watching it.  Some storyline's seem to drag on, but this one with Sinead was a heart breaker and a perfect length.

Well done to the actors and the writers on this storyline; I wouldn't be surprised if they won awards for this.

I must start writing things down........

I had a couple of things that I wanted to share with you, but do you think I can remember what they were?  I don't know.  I could understand it if I worked full time, had a few kids running around the place and a hundred and one other things to do, but I don't?  I am one of these people who are more productive when under the gun.  I need to start writing lists again, so things happen.

I do know I want to get a couple of things done today, so I guess if I write a list here maybe things will get done, who knows?

• Drop of a bottle of wine at the make your own wine place for them to taste it.  Dh says it's awful tastes like gnat pee......meanwhile me who doesn't drink had a taste and enjoyed it.  At this point dh said there HAD to be something wrong with it!
• Call in at the bank and pick up some US dollars before the Canadian Dollar drops even lower.  Both dh and I keep saying we have a recession knocking on our door in Canada.
• Pick up prescription pills in WalMart pharmacy, that have been ready for a few days; another case of forgetting to pick up.
• Steam clean the ceramic and hardwood floors.  DONE
• Water tubs outside.  We pay for our water through our monthly maintenance fees, but I have started using the dish water from washing dishes to an attempt to save water.  It has been hot and dry, so I am thinking the reservoirs must be getting low? DONE
• Finish knitting another gnome for a gift.
• Make supper, a ham and pasta dish; no recipe just making it up.
• Watch Coronation Street; VERY IMPORTANT "JOB."

I know there are a lot more things I have to do, but as long as I get those done I will be happy.  It's going to be up to 39 oC  (102 oF) with the humidity today so this afternoon all the blinds will be closed and I will be hibernating.

Oh and finally I MUST find time to visit everyone's blogs, as I am so behind in doing that.

Was watching Coronation Street and was laughing at the scene where Lloyd and Tyrone were singing this on the trawler; yes they were as drunk as skunks.  Haven't heard this song in years.  Very feminine looking Rod Stewart in this video.



For those of you who are not in the know, Coronation Street is a British Soap Opera that is older than I am.  It's very British and I know the stories aren't real but devoted Coronation Street fans do get wrapped up in the story lines.  I am excited to see Kylie back in the next week or two, as Callum is just getting annoying now.........mind you wouldn't mind waking up beside him in a morning he is very easy on the eyes.  He might have an issue though waking up next to me though!

Such a softie.........

Sitting here writing this on Tuesday night in tears.  Why?  Watching Coronation Street and it's Haley's last day.  It's funny I know what is going to happen but it doesn't make it any easier.  Feel so sorry for Roy; all this sadness and crying for a flipping soap opera that's not even real.

Had Sarah around today (Tuesday) to make sure we are ready to have the photos taken to put the house up for sale.  Due to another winter storm coming in Tuesday night through Wednesday (that's nice!!) the photos won't be taken until Thursday but it will be on the market late Friday/Saturday.

As I said to Sarah on Tuesday I have ran out of steam.  Enough of all this cleaning and trying to make the house perfect.  We have done as much as we can now and it is what it is.

Hockey Play-Offs or Coronation Street?

Coronation Street of course.  So why when the hockey play-offs start they stop playing Coronation Street???

Totally fed up here.  Now I only saw part of the ticker tape last night announcing that it won't be back on until May 13th.............did I miss anything else on that announcement?  In this day and age when everyone and their auntie can record things, you would hope they would have put it on at a different time?  I am hoping someone is going to say yes I can do that.......

Not much to say today....

Friday was a ho-hum day.  Got my hair cut, then dyed it myself.  Did some grocery shopping.  Read a bit, reading a good book called "Sister's of the Sari," by Brenda L. Baker.  Did go to Swiss Chalet for supper as we were running errands in town.  Watched Coronation Street, don't like that Kristy do you?  So all in all a pretty boring day on Friday.

SOLD! and happy birthday to our daughter......

A guy came by one Friday night and bought the snow tires from us.  Got $400 for them, wanted $500; regardless they are gone and now I can get snow tires put on my car.  Still have to find another $600 to pay for them, but that's better than $1,000.  Must say I am glad I don't have to deal with this anymore, as there truly are some strange people who troll Kijiji.

It's our daughter's 27th birthday today.  She is like a small child as she is so excited about it.  She was telling me on Friday it was only one more sleep to her birthday!!  Must say it's infectious her enthusiasm for life.  I am making lunch for them all and we are having lasagna or fettuccine Alfredo, Cesar salad and garlic bread.  Followed by apple caramel pie with whipped cream or ice cream.  More or less all from M & M Meats.  I cashed in the $25 discount card when I spent $50.  I also picked up 2 x chicken lasagna, cheese and spinach cannelloni, three cheese pasta, 5 vegetable toasty's (no idea what those are about), steak and vegetable soup and loaded potato soup which I got free for spending over $10.  All in all it cost me $26.

I will post photos of what we got her tomorrow.  I am also getting the baby shower photos on Sunday, so fingers crossed I will be able to share with you on Monday.

On Friday the people down the hill from us was having some sort of fire all day.  I have no idea what on earth they were burning as the smoke was tremendous.  Luckily I didn't have my laundry out, otherwise it would have stunk of smoke.

Sad to hear about Bill Tarmey, "Jack Duckworth's" passing.  Always loved his and Vera's character on Coronation Street.

After five days of rain it was a little cool today in the house, so we had the fire on before lunch:

We still don't have the heating on yet. Molly took advantage of the fire being on and lay down in front of it.

With it being cool and very windy I picked a number of tomatoes and peppers:

I plan on making some tomato sauce with them.

I have to travel back and forth to the city twice on Saturday, as dh was supposed to be getting work done on his work truck.  It is only a couple of months old and it is a big "L," lemon!!!!  It has to go back to the garage again, as a major electrical component in the truck needs to be replaced and of course they didn't have it in stock.  It caused all the windows to open on their own the other day....freaky or what!!!

Not sure if you are all familiar with WAGJAG it's a site where you can purchase items/services at discounts.  I took advantage of a coffee deal, but what a job I had trying to get it.  It turned out this lady had a web only business, and I was under the impression it was a cafe.  As she worked full time through the week, trying to get together for me to pick the coffee up was difficult, so this deal wasn't the best for me.  Have to say though I have had good luck with other deals. 

I purchased a couple of Groupon deals on Saturday as I have had good luck with that site as well.  I have only ever bought one deal off of Living Social and that was a magazine subscription.  Are you a fan of these discount deal sites?

Finally, in answer to your mushroom questions.  I knew it was okay to eat as I looked it up on the Internet and found a picture of the mushroom.  Also I figured it must be fine if the guy was picking them.  Also when we were growing up we used to eat field mushrooms, so are familiar with them. 

I would like to take a mushroom identification course though, as I am sure there are many more varieties that we could eat.

Very sad news just in; Betty from Coronation Street has died, I wonder how they are going to write her out of the series......

Thanksgiving weekend and what I have been up too this week.....

It's Thanksgiving weekend in Canada this weekend and the weather forecast is glorious.  It's been a busy week and will be a busy weekend, as I want to take advantage of this lovely weather.  I am guessing most Canadians will be out and about making the most of the good weather, as we all know it will not last!!


Due to it being so nice, we still don't have our heating on and the way the forecast is playing out, I don't expect to turn it on this coming week either.  We have had the fire on a couple of times to take the chill off when the sun goes down, which is a nice way to ease me into cleaning out the fireplace again.


My main job this week has been decorating and I have got a lot done.  What a difference it has made to the hall, stairs and landing painting the walls.  I didn't realize how dirty those walls were.  I have painted the walls the same colour as the attic, a cream colour with a hint of brown/pink.  It warms everything up and makes it look fresh.  Due to the weather being so nice I also got the front and mud room doors painted inside and out.

I also got the walls painted in the laundry room and dh is hoping to get the trim installed this weekend, so I can paint that.  He has started on the electrics but still has a ways to go.  He is full of cold so that is slowing him down.

In between hands I have made a start on cutting the grass.  The goal is to get that all cut this weekend and do some trimming of the edges as well.  The leaves are starting to fall so I mulch them as well.

Managed to get Molly bathed this week, as her skin is looking sore again.  Also clipped her nails and she actually sat still this time.  I have an appointment at the vets for Thursday to have her yearly check up and get a couple of jabs.

We voted on Thursday night.  Still can't understand why we have to have two sets of Governments in Canada?  Terrible turn out though, less than 50% of the people in Ontario voted.

I haven't gotten around to everyone's blogs, as by the time I have washed up after supper, I have been pooped.  I have been doing a bit of reading on a night as it relaxes me, and to be honest there is nothing worth while watching on tv.  Even Coronation Street is annoying now that Tracey is back; she drives me crazy!!!

Coronation Street and a couple of good deals..........

Did you watch Coronation Street this week, it was so good wasn't it?  Very well done and quite believable.  Had me in tears at times.......

My good deals this week were these Stouffers Express Meals on clearance for $1 a packet, should have been around $5 each.  I can't make the meals for that.  Zehrs also had PC family sized Lasagna  on for $5.99 so picked up a couple of those for the freezer.

I also got this McCain Cake for free; it was what I won at Canadian Tire with the scratch and save ticket.  Better than nothing.

A while back there was a deal at Sobeys, that when you bought $20 worth of product you got a $20 Sobey's gift card back.  I remember due to pricing I had to buy around $25 worth of stuff but it was worth while.  I got the gift card this week, and so I got 4 blocks of Kraft Cracker Barrel cheese 500 grams each and a 4 litre bag of milk and paid only $4.35 for all, so that was good.

Pleased to say our chest freezer in the basement it stocked to the top, which is always a good feeling.  I now need to do some menu planning and sort everything out.

New to me recipe and other things.........

I bought leeks at the market last week, so decided to try this recipe:

French Leek and Ham Shepherd's Pie.

Ingredients



2 1/4 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
1/2 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons butter
1 pinch ground nutmeg
salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 1/2 pounds leeks, sliced
2 medium tomatoes - peeled, seeded, and coarsely chopped
1 1/2 pounds cooked ham, thinly sliced
1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)


Directions


Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly oil a 2 quart casserole dish.


Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, cool and chop. Stir in the cream, butter, nutmeg, salt, and pepper and mash until smooth.


Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the onion until translucent. Stir in the leek and cook another minute until the leek is soft, but not brown. Mix in the peeled tomatoes, lower the heat, and simmer five minutes, stirring occasionally until the tomatoes have lost some of their shape. Stir in the ham and season with salt and pepper.


Spread half of the mashed potatoes on the bottom of the casserole dish. Pour in the ham and leek sauce and cover with the remaining mashed potatoes. Brush the surface of the mashed potatoes with the beaten egg yolk. Sprinkle on the shredded mozzarella. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.


Of course I didn't have everything on hand, so made mine a little differently.  I only had a little bit of ham, so added half a pound of mushrooms that needed using up.  I didn't add the tomatoes, which was fine.  I had some french onion dip in the fridge so I put that in the potatoes for added flavour.

 
This is a very versatile recipe, where you could add or remove ingredients easily and was very, very tasty.  Should also add, I know my leeks weren't French, they were grown in Ontario!!!
 
If we go to the market this week, I am going to buy more leeks to pop into the freezer.  You wash and dry them and cut them up as you like and then freeze.  Great for soup or casseroles.  I read you can also freeze diced up butternut squash, so will do that as well.
 
Got crazy weather here, had the a/c on, on Monday as it was that warm?  Then it's going to be freezing cold by the end of the week?  We'll all be as sick as dogs if it carries on like this.

Coronation Street and a Book Review

Good news/bad news regarding Coronation Street.  It is now on an hour per day Monday through Friday, so in theory we will sort of catchup with Britain at long flipping last.  Bad news, actually more like sad news, I had tears flowing down my face last night, as it was Jack's funeral and poor Tyrone was so upset.  I think the whole of Jack's death was handled so well.  We are now close to the end of November 2010, and for those of you in Britain yes I do know what is going to happen next!!  I "peek" at this site every week to see what's going on!!! 

"The Doctor's Lady," by Jody Hedlund

Priscilla White knows she'll never be a wife or mother and feels God's call to the mission field in India. Loved the book and the character's.  Priscilla was such a strong character and you can't help but want to encourage her to never give up.  I will say I felt her pain in one part of the book, as any mother would.  Sorry I can't say more but it would spoil the story.  It was interesting to learn more about the native Indian tribes and the struggle to cross across America by land.

I was interested to read in the Author's note at the back of the book, that this is based on a true story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman  If you love history, with a little romance added you will love this book.

Stars out of 5: 4.5 loved it just wished the book was longer.  Couldn't put it down.

Busy, busy and a fun video

It's a case of not enough hours in the day at the moment.  I am busy varnishing the banister and handrails on the new stairs.  Which in turn is aggravating my poor aching head.  I have opened a window while doing it, but it's still pretty cold up here, so can only have them open for so long.

I made a couple of shepherd's pies for the freezer yesterday, as ground beef/mince was on sale, plus I had some potatoes that needed using up.

Bit of good news dd got her job permanently after being on contract for nearly a year.  So she now has job security which is good, and in turn it means more money which is always handy.

Funny story about Molly and a squirrel.  Molly was on the back deck when a squirrel was on the railing with a big piece of bread.  It stopped in its tracks when it saw Molly and for a moment there was a bit of a "stare off."  Then the squirrel realized it was only Molly and started to eat it's piece of bread again.  Meanwhile Molly thought she would be sneaky and step one paw at a time closer to the squirrel.  Everytime she did that, the squirrel looked up and again decided it's only Molly.  However when Molly got quite close the squirrel had enough and off it went, with Molly still sitting there.

Not sure if Molly would know what to do with a squirrel if she caught one?  She was limping earlier in the week, no idea what she did with her back paw, but she seems fine now.

I used to work out to Richard Simmons video's all the time.  He has now done an air safety video for Air New Zealand.  Now if you are like me when on board a flight worrying about other things, I tend to get distracted when they are doing the boring air safety directions.  If they played this it would certainly have my attention.

Oh and a very "exciting" day in Coronation Street, as Tony has Carla and Haley in the factory............I  have to keep reminding myself, that it isonly a soap opera.....LOL....but heck it is good at the moment.........

A very unusual and sad story.......

My friend was telling me that last week in the town closest to us there was a funeral for a mother and her new born baby, they had died in child birth.  Apparently the mother had bled to death.  That is something I don't hear happening at all over here, or does it? 

I thought in this day and age that would be something that would happen in third world countries, but obviously not?  Regardless though I said a prayer for the mother and her baby and the family they left behind, such a sad and shocking story.

On an lighter note, is anyone watching American Idol?  I honestly thought with Simon leaving it would be a terrible show, however I am loving it.  The new judges are great and they have a lot of great talent this year.  My favourite guy is a tie between  Jacob Lusk and Casey Abrams.  My favourite girl is a tie between Thia Megia and Lauren Alaina  One thing I have to say is that they are all pretty young this year. 

Then Survivor has started again and that is actually good at the moment.  I normally don't "get into it" until the tribes are merged.  However I am a huge fan of Boston Rob, so am watching it because of him.

Busy time for me watching tv this week, as on Coronation Street it's been Blanche's funeral and have to say loved the way that was done, Blanche would have been proud. Even had a tear in my eye when Dierdre said the eulogy about her mother.  Can't believe we are nearly a year behind Britain I wish we could catch up a bit......

Busy, sorry, happy anniversary....

Thursday was a super busy day, I never stopped all day.  What with trying to get some grass cut, tidying up around the new cedars I planted. Writing the column for the Eden Valley Messenger and submitting it; never mind it was three days late this week....oops!  Actually doing a little tidying up in the house.  Going to the church hall in the afternoon to help with prep for the Strawberry Supper on Saturday, then travelling 50 minutes to Brampton, to meet dh at the doctors to get his results for his CAT scan; he's fine just has to keep on taking his puffers and nasal spray?  Then driving back home (we got fish and chips for supper on the way home).  Back out in the garden for an hour of edging the grass, barely made a dint in the edging.  Then making a start on cutting the field, I don't feel as though I have stopped all day.

So I'm sorry but I just haven't had the time to visit anyone's blogs.

Then today Friday June 18th is our 27th Wedding Anniversary.  Gosh the years have gone by fast.  No plans on doing anything.  Dh finishes work at lunch time to get home in time for the England vs Algeria game which is on at 2:15pm our time. Me, well I will no doubt be cutting the grass or ironing!!

Oh and a sort of sad thing.  I was watching Coronation Street on Thursday and it was when Rita told Emily that Ramsy had died on his way to Australia.  Emily put on a cd of Australian songs, and it played Waltzing Matilda,  I haven't heard or thought of that song in many years.  Poor Emily looked so sad and so old when listening to this song.

Close encounter with a.......

FROG.......AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!  Okay it may have been a toad, but regardless it was a slimy creature and was HUGE.....at least a foot across, as we have giant ones up here on the Acreage!!  And you all know how terrified I am of frogs.

They are not very clear shots, but believe me they will have to do as I wasn't getting any closer!!  I think I did well to get as close as I did.

Something is eating the bark off the tree and I think it's the squirrels as they like to perch up there and "talk" to Molly!!

Dh has finally got a day off today.  He has been working seven days a week for a while and long, long days.  Infact he refused to work today, as England is playing the USA in World Cup Soccer at 2:15pm our time.  I may even join him in watching the game, I'll see.  All I am excited about is that all the games are on early enough in the day, so Coronation Street will be on, as its on the same station that has the World Cup Soccer on.   Finally someone saw sense about making sure Coronation Street should stay on.  Saying that the story line is pretty dull at the moment.  I'm liking the Eastenders one better.  Even I thought it was sad when Bradley left Stacey, she looked heartbroken.  We are at Valentine's Day 2008.  Coronation Street we are on or around August 24th, 2009.

A panic attack...and other bits and bobs.

It started out as a mild panic attack, but gradually got worse and worse. I never ever suffer from panic attacks, but this is what started me off on Thursday:

"So you haven't seen the episode yet where the crazed bomber blows up the Rovers with everybody in it. Whoops, sorry."

That was what Grumpy Old Ken wrote in reply to yesterday's post, when I was talking about Coronation Street.

When I first read it I couldn't figure out how come I had missed this, as yes I do peek at what is going on in Britain re: Coronation Street. Then I thought it must be something that is going on currently with the series in Britain. Then I thought I should maybe call my mother to see what's what, all the time panicking more!!

However I was in the middle of typing a letter to my neighbour in Britain, and wanted to get that done and get it mailed. All the time I am typing the letter, I couldn't get this out of my mind.

Then it dawned on me, he's pulling my leg/joking with me, this isn't true at all!!! I mean Grumpy Old Ken, don't you know how serious we Coronation Street fans are? You can't play with us like that. For all you Coronation Street fans out there, what should we do with Grumpy Old Ken....LOL

Just so you know I am now kidding, and I didn't have a panic attack, although I do admit to being totally confused for a few minutes about the Rovers being blown up!!

Update on the attic. Both me and dh tidied up in the attic, and on Saturday we will start to insulate it. Actually dh will be insulating it, I do not like touching that pink insulation, its icky. I will take photos and will post them on Sunday. I just don't think you can see a lot going on in there at the moment. Luckily for us, its been quite warm this week, which has been a blessing with us not having any insulation in the attic.

We got the oil tank filled the other day. It was filled on closing back at the end of April, and we got it topped up on Tuesday, which is nearly six months, and we had only used half a tank during that time. We thought that was good, what do you guys who have oil heating think? They put in 394 litres and we paid .794 cents a litre, for a total of $328.48 (incl tax). I am hoping this will last us until January?

I think it was close to $700 we were charged on closing for oil, along with this $328, so say $1,000 so far for oil, and $900 for wood. Its going to work out a lot more expensive to heat than our old house, as we were paying only around $1,800 for gas heating there. We are also finding the hydro a lot more expensive here, only because they charge us so much for the delivery charges, not a lot we can do there though?

P.S. the mice are back........caught two this week :0(

Finally the guys came to fix the roof, and basically whoever put the new shingles on, did it wrong.......are we surprised about this, heck no, it just goes with the rest of the problems with this house. So while they were doing the one repair they took a look at the extension roof and found another problem there, so all in all it cost $700 to get it all fixed {{SIGH}}

I have to say they seem to be the most disorganized group I have ever seen. I ended up going out to get out of the way, as they were driving me crazy. My dad was here, so gave him the money to pay the guys. Dad did some more work in the attic, so its looking good that we may be able to start insulating this weekend.

I popped to the quilting store to pick up some material and have decided on the black and white theme quilt, with a red accent. It should be nice and I can't wait to start on it; however I have a couple of other things to do first, then I can make a start.

Anyone watching Coronation Street? Did you enjoy the Christmas and New Year episodes? Yep for those of you in Britain, we finally had Christmas 2008 and New Year 2009, we are 10 months behind. I am totally fed up of the Molly and Tyrone storyline. Enjoying the Liz and Lloyd storyline. Wish Steve and Becky would just get on with it. Glad to see Maria has gone on vacation, as that storyline is annoying as well.

I am enjoying Eastenders better at the moment. The Dawn, Rob and May storyline is proving interesting. Not sure how far behind we are in that show.

A couple of photos of Molly......

The first one isn't in focus sorry, but it shows Molly's favourite toy, her Hedgehog, she takes it to bed with her on a night. I had to resew its nose as she chewed it off.

This is Molly sitting on the sofa. I was shocked to see her jump on the sofa, as she normally only does it when dh is about, as I shout at her to get down. Mind you with those eyes, how can you refuse her anything?

Though saying that on Monday she was driving me crazy with her barking. I was cutting the lawn and had her tied up, but she wouldn't stop barking, at what I have no idea.

I have been letting her wander about on the back deck, by blocking off the steps with the patio chairs. Well today she "escaped," fortunately she didn't wander too far and I was able to catch her without having to run after her. So until dh makes a proper gate for the back deck, I can't let her off the leash.

When we first got her, although she is short haired she shed like a crazy person. I am pleased to say that seems to have come to a stop, not that there isn't dog hair on the floor, it's pretty minimal, which is good.

Can't believe its September today, where have the last four months gone too, as we moved into this house on May 1st, 2009. I am finally beginning to see a difference, and can see where some of our hard work has gone to. I will have a before and after photo on Friday for you.

They have gone and changed the time for Coronation Street to 6:30pm now, what the heck??? What a stupid time of day. Luckily we can pick up the channels from out west, so I'll have to find it on one of those to watch at a later time. Its bad enough that Eastenders is on at either 12 noon or 4pm, but to move Coronation Street is just not on!!! At that........Gill stomps off in a strop!!
