Irons, kettle and hoovers......

are all items that I go through on piece in our house.  I don't know what it is, but they need replacing on a regular basis with me.

Irons are the worst one usually lasts only a couple of years......if I am lucky.  Followed by kettles, which are always iffy, although my dad and step-mum seem to go through them more than me.

Now my Kenmore hoover which is only a couple of years old is on the fritz.  I think the power head has gone and the performance indicator light is permanently on all the time now.  Mine is similar to this one:

However I am considering splashing out for a Dyson one in the future, any thoughts?  We mainly have hardwood floors in the house, but we have a number of rugs and they get covered in Molly's dog hair, so I need a one that works well on rugs, plus we have carpet on the attic stairs and will have carpet on the main stairs eventually.

Nothing seems to be built to last nowadays though does it? What wears out quickly in your house?

Toasters is our thing... and vacuum cleaners. We're okay with kettles! It's probably down to cheap workmanship.

I have 2 dogs & a cat and own the Dyson "Animal". It has slightly more power for pulling hair out of carpets and does a great job. I don't find the furniture attachments to be as easy to handle as they should be but for getting hair out of carpet it's the best vacuum I've ever used.

Have you looked at Miele. They have a 10 year warranty at no extra charge.

I am with you on the kettle thing. I have been through several electric kettle, the one prior to the one now lasted less than a year. And it was so cute -- round and bright red. I guess next on the list is irons but I have been doing pretty good with the one I have now. I finally passed Target's palm with a good chunk of money for a Rowenta and I haven't been disappointed. The vacuums seem to do better for me but my vacuuming now is a lot lighter because I only have carpet in two rooms. My children have Dyson's and they like them except the regular Dyson is very heavy and the lighter weight one with the ball is hard on the wrists. Go to the store and just practice with them before you buy.

I have a Dyson and love it. It pulls the dirt right out of the carpet. I will never buy any other brand. In my opinion, it's the best and you don't need to buy bags anymore. Go for it!!

You're right. They don't make them to last anymore. It must be deliberate! I use a Dyson in U.S. and an Electrolux here. I prefer the Electrolux (cylinder) The Dyson is too heavy for me to lug about, but Larry loves it. My point is.....? I hear you - 'let him do it then'. We get through kettles fast here because the water is very hard - good for the arteries but not so good for kettles and washing machines. The pumps go quickly on a washing machine here. CALGON cures that, but it is expensive to keep buying.
I like the look of your Kenmore. That's my sort of vacuum cleaner.

I would suggest looking at a Miele. That is what I bought -- their basic little red canister and I have been very happy. I also bought the pet hair attachment because we had a cat at the time, and it worked very well. I don't have a cat anymore so I am not using it right now -- however, I keep seeing a new little Cairn in my future so who knows but so far I have been happy with it so far.

I have been wanting a Dyson for years but have you seen the price of those things?!

Things don't tend to wear out quickly for me...except for clothes as I can't afford to buy them most of the time, so what I do have fades pretty quickly and the seams tend to split, mostly on sleeves. My Kenmore vacuum lasted ages and ages, it actually went through both my mom and me before dying at the ripe old age of about 15 last year! I now have a trusty little Dirt Devil which has been running like a dream for about a year.

I have enjoyed our Dysons vacuum cleaner. It seems to have lasted longer than any other and I'm very happy with it. In the market for a toaster now. Mine packed up this week and it lasted about five years.

Can openers use to be our thing.
Now we have one that states "Every can every time." It actually works.
We have a central vac system but I still have the Kenmore type vacuum style similar to yours and don't have any issues with it.
My Sister has a Miele and swears by it. They have pets and it works wonderfully, along with being very light.

I have a dyson and Im not overly impressed. They do suck well, but are hard to pull apart to do the corners. Im sure a man developed them, its all about the power but you can tell they had no idea about how a vacum is actually used.

I have a Beam central vac and its been here so long I can't remember how old it is and I have had no problems with it. Grant you I have no pets or children at home, but I use it on a regular basis. Now, having said that -- you know what will happen don't you, yes the dam thing will quite working.
I know the Dyson's are a bit pricey.
Good luck
Patricia

Is that light on the cannister part of the cleaner...the one you say stays on. I have a Kenmore, have had it for probably 15 years...and it has really been a work horse...anyway, have you made sure that the line is not plugged? Also, it might be worth taking it to get it fixed...we have had to do a few little things to ours but sure not like going and paying for a new one.
