Awkward or what.............

Last Friday there was a knock at the door and a woman was standing there.  I had never seen her before, and she introduced herself as the woman that used to own the house....okay........

She went on to say that due to the fact that they moved in winter they had left some things in the garden and would it be possible to take them now?

At this point I should explain my brain is still processing the fact that this is the woman who owned the house, as over here when buying a house you have little to no contact with the owners of the house you are buying from as that is what you pay your real estate agent for.   So what I am trying to say is my brain is not moving as fast as this conversation was.  So my face must have registered surprise/confusion/annoyance/goodness knows what else.

So she says that this is a bit awkward, but she wants to take this green glass rock.  So I say won't it still be frozen into the ground?

She then goes on to say her grandma had given it and then went on to say about the bad weather when they moved.

I said fine take whatever you want and closed the door.  I saw her walking down the driveway with the big glass rock but that was all.

Now the whole bad weather thing is a crock of lies.  As I mentioned in my first moving house post, it didn't start snowing until 4pm on the day we moved.  Prior to that the weather was fine and they were moved out of the house well before that.

I just can't believe you would walk up to the house you used to own and ask for stuff you left over 4 months ago?  I had no problem with her taking that and anything else, I just think it was a bit cheeky.

What do you think?  Again I was more surprised about the whole thing as it came out of no where.

I suppose at least she asked! Rather awkward for you, I agree.

It is strange indeed. However, I once forgot a set of three pans and had to go back and ask my tenant who moved in a week after I moved out. The pans were brand new and were in a hidden kind of drawer inside of a bigger one and the movers did not see them to pack.

Another thought: That green glass rock was actually kryptonite and the woman was an alien. Lol!

I would probably not worry about it. Here you have little contact between buyers and sellers but I have had prior owners who wanted cuttings of special plants, and an iris risome that had originally come from an owners mom. It never bothered me. I also found a full length mink in a closet that was left behind at one house and sterling Christmas ornaments in another house that I tracked down the previous owners to return them.

Our previous owner turned up a couple of days after our move to return a curtain pole finial that she'd packed by mistake (?). I think it was an excuse to see the furniture that had moved into her old house.
I had a friend who actually let herself in to her old house with the key she'd forgotten to give in. Lesson to be learned - change the locks when you move house.

What a cheek! I would have been inclined to say no you should have taken it when you moved, but as you say, sometimes these things take you by surprise and it's easy to think what you should have said after the fact.
My daughters house had some love old grey bricks made into a path in the garden of the house they were buying but when they moved in they discovered that the previous owners had taken up the path! I told her to let the estate agent know but she never did, I think the previous owners new how much they were worth and sold them to a reclamation yard.

I don't find it weird; and it was nice that you let her have the rock.

I think she wasn't the previous owner but just lied to get the rock.

I can see that being awkward.

Very cheeky. She could have asked the realtor or lawyer to contact you for permission. If it was precious to her it should have been written in to the contract.

Back in the 70s my parents bought a house. We'd been about three months when there was a knock at the door. A woman said she was there to pick up the "beer"fridge (a Canadian term for the old fridge in the basement used to keep cold drinks) and that XX had said to drop by any time! XX was the previous owner! Now that's nerve.

We've always changed the locks, I just don't trust people.

The house we are currently in, we found a machete in the hall closet and a box of shotgun shells in a basement rafter. I turned them in at the local police statement.

One would think if it was that important to her she would have been back before now.

God bless.

Our bungalow had been repossessed as the owners went bankrupt, and had lain empty for months when we moved in. In the loft I found a beautiful wedding album full of photos, it had fallen into a gap in the planking. I showed an elderly neighbour who confirmed it was pictures of the former owners and their family. He said his granddaughter's children were at the same school, and could get the album back to them. So she gave it back. I naively imagined somebody might have said thankyou. Nobody ever did!
