It turned out the insurance had increased by $35 per month, which is over $400 a year. So I called them up (PC Financial) and said that this was unacceptable and what could they do to remedy the matter? We both have clean driving records. No claims, nothing that would make our rates jump $400 a year.
Now I will say I called CAA Insurance up first to see what they would quote us, just to make sure that all insurance rates were not that expensive, and they were quoting around $1,300 a year. PC Financial was $1,700 a year.
The PC Financial guy got back to me with three more quotes from the people they deal with. The first one was for around $1,300, but the catch with that one was, they review your policy on a monthly basis and your payment can go up or down, just like it does if you have a variable mortgage.
As I said to the guy it's more likely to go up, rather than go down, so no thank you.
The other two options were no better.
We ended up going with CAA Insurance, and also we moved our house insurance as well. The price of the house insurance was similar to what we paid already, just a little cheaper. The car insurance came in at $1200 and something per year after all said and done. We joined CAA as well, which was another $140(?) but that will come in handy when we travel, so that gave us a discount as well.
Supposedly, insurance rates have jumped up all over the country/world. I am glad I questioned our renewal, as at the end of the day, $400 is better in my pocket than in the insurance companies pockets.
Have your insurance rates increased for your house and car?

Well done!
I was very pleased that my car insurance only went up by about £7 a year. I thought it would be much, much more.
xx
YES! Our car quote this week was DOUBLE the previous year. Dearly beloved spent ages finding a cheaper quote... Finally went with Churchill, a well known and reliable company. But it is a necessity. When we lived in London, our cars were parked in a very quiet road beside the house. An elderly gentleman drove into my husband's ford and it was very badly damaged. A month later he reversed into my Citroen at speed and it was written off. Without decent insurance we'd have been in real difficulty. Mr Smith continued to drive. Fortunately we were about to move away.
Our insurance broker is constantly looking out for the best deal for us. We really like this company.
We had a fire in January which cost my insurance company a few dollars to settle so I'm rather nervous about how that is going to reflect. I pay a crazy amount already because we are more than 13 km from the nearest fire hall with no water source within so many feet. Having taken out our oil and wood heat, I was told my house insurance will drop significantly....we'll see.
In the US here insurance rates are always going up. We moved to a state unfortunately that has a no fault policy. Even if it is not your fault you get dinged. So our rates have been so high for the last 8 years we have had to have the bare minimum just to make ends meet. Same with house insurance. They keep claiming it is because materials are going up.
But some states like California are dropping people because of repeated wildfires and bad weather. So I guess that is good we do not live there.
Yep insurance goes up every time it's due. We live in Iowa and pay our car insurance every 6 months and house insurance yearly. By doing this the insurance is cheater than paying it monthly.
We have been CAA members for awhile and love it. Many places give discounts to CAA members. Must check out their insurance costs.
God bless.
We have thought of switching to CAA but then we wonder if they would have a policy whereby you had to have a certain number of years of no-claims before they will 'forgive' an infraction. Our current insurers, after I had a fender bender several years ago, told us that it would be 6 years before we got our clean driving record back. They didn't increase our cost because it was a first accident for either of us, but told us that if there was another one before the 6 years was up we'd get a big increase then. Not sure if CAA would have the same sort of rules. Something I guess I could ask about. We've been CAA members for years and use them for travel insurance when we need it.
