Produce Box

With the price of food sky rocketing on a daily basis, I have decided to get a produce bag once a month.  It is $20 per month and I have been pretty pleased with it.  Above is what I got in December.  This month's seemed heavy on the fruit and other than the cucumber no salad items.

Have you seen the price of lettuce, you need to take out a second mortgage to buy one!!

We used to live off salad, but due to the higher prices I am having to adapt our diet.  The pepper's I used to make a pepper and onion quiche.  Carrots were used in soup and mashed carrot and turnip.  I have been making baked potatoes, both stuffed and plain.  The onions were used in various things.

I managed to get some bagged salad on sale so topped that with diced up cucumber.  By the way am I the only one who gets a bad stomach when I eat cucumber?  The only way I can eat them now is peeled.  It's something in the skin that upsets some people's stomach.

All the fruit was eaten raw as is, except the apples, and I am not fond of apples, I don't hate them just not something I buy often, so will probably make apples sauce with them.

Are you finding the price of fruit and veg crazy?

We and the excessive lettuce prices by late winter. I planted some under plastic as was able to pick and eat every other day.
We joked I could sell it and become really rich.
I think food prices are going up everywhere, unfortunately

Since retiring, I'm thrilled to find a brilliant wholesale greengrocers who sell to the public on local market stalls and via their warehouse. They cost a little more than the supermarket, but you can buy the quantity you want - eg a huge sack of potatoes, a small bag - or just two. AND the produce is really fresh, and keeps for ages, no wastage. I go every two or three weeks - and unlike a veg box, I can choose exactly what I want. I'm trying to grow my own veg too. Hope to start some salad "microgreens" in January

I'm the same as you about apple's, don't buy them very often as they sit in the bowl till I throw them away most times. Except for bananas I'm not overly keen on any fruit. The price of everything has gone up such a lot, a block of cheese in Aldi has shot up from £1.99 to £2.69 in the matter of two weeks! Ridiculous.

They really are! I've been swapping salads for (as healthy as I can) homemade coleslaw with some success.

I think I spend a significant % of my weekly budget for food on fruit & veg. Definitely there's things I think I'd like to buy that I don't due to the cost. The last two/three weeks I notice cauliflower in my area has been incredibly expensive so despite my wanting a nice cauliflower cheese, I've not bought any. I tend to buy a lot of what's on offer fruit/veg wise with a couple staples that are weekly. I try to be flexible and think along the lines of getting 2/3 green veg, carrots, cabbage, a couple salad-y bits if possible. Then 3 types fruits - but again varying what they are based on $.

While prices in the UK have also gone up, friends and relatives are always shocked at how much our food is here. Did you think food was cheaper when you last went back for a trip to see family? I haven't visited the UK since returning to Canada almost 13 years ago but I remember at that time thinking the same thing.

Who do you get the box from Gill? The most reasonable ones here are from Food Share/Good Food Box which is a brilliant social enterprise. I've had them off and on for about 11 years now. I don't currently get one, but may change that over the winter. They do some incredibly good work.

My dad used to avoid cucumbers until he started growing his own and they didn't upset after that. Daughter, Beth, can't eat any cucumber, how grown, peeled, whatever, they upset her system. A shame because a tasty home grown cucumber is delicious.

Veg at this time of year is more expensive as Canada it needs to import most of it. However, this Winter, producers, distributors and stores are taking advantage of us with the high prices. Just my opinion and just saying.

This past grocery day I bought frozen veg that require cooking as the ones I usually get looked as if they had been out all weekend, still at the regular high price. We usually have a fresh veg tray, celery, radish and carrot sticks with our lunch, doing the same, however, using sparingly to last the week.

A news report some time back indicated veg. grown in the South Americas would be cheaper, time will tell.

Cheers.

My Food Basics had lettuce for $4 one day so I snagged one. I don't eat lettuce or cucumber because it gives me indigestion, but my partner was so excited. He's a big salad eater. I watch the ads carefully and make sure I can buy what we need at the best price. Living near a small town, all of the big three grocery stores are a short distance from each other so it makes sense to hit them all if needs must.

All my favorite foods are so high. I love lettuces, eggs, milk. I suck it up and buy it because they are good for me. It seems I can find meat at better prices than these items. At least, I can afford food. But, I never have seen or heard of food boxes, except for CSAs.
