Jack Straws anyone?

Do you remember this game from your childhood?

I ordered a few things from Lakeland Plastics and the game was one of those things.

The only problem with Lakeland Plastics is their delivery charge for non EU countries.  So I spent 30 pounds so I didn't have to pay shipping and get the order shipped to my mam and she ships it on for me.  Now the funny thing about my parcel, I ordered some candy, Licorice Alsorts amongst everything else.  So when my mam went to mail the parcel it was going to cost just over 30 pounds.  So the lady at the post office suggested she split the parcel up so it would be cheaper as it was over a certain weight.  Well it was decided that my mam and step-father would eat the candy and it ended up costing just over thirteen pounds.  So the cheap candy which cost two pounds would have cost me nineteen plus pounds.

Then she mails it ground which can take anywhere between six weeks to three months to get here.  It came in 8 days?  Go figure.......  My mam is going to Lakeland Plastics this next week, and the Lakeland Christmas catalog came on Friday, so need to study it to see if there is anything I need!!!

The trees are starting to change and the weather has been glorious these past few days.  Did put the flannel sheets on the bed as dh is cold, but still don't have the fire or heating on.
I was able to have a fire in the fire pit on Thursday as it was finally a calm day.  Look at all the weeds in my raspberry bushes, anyone fancy helping me weed them?

Lovely photos Gill! Mailing costs can be really over the top.

We had a Jack Straws game just like that at home back in the 1970s! Happy memories of Sunday afternoon round the table carefully extracting the items!

In the 90s, when there were fewer Lakeland shops, our young mums group used to put in an order together, so we got 'free postage'

enjoy your goodies when they arrive

weekend blessings x

Rather than go through the normal post there is a website where you can put the weight of your parcel and private companies bid to ship it for you: you go with the cheapest. I get huge parcels sent from the UK all the time for very little..even food parcels on bad months lol. I will get hold of it and post it for you xx

As we left England in the very early 1970's I'm not familiar with that company but the game looks similar to one called Pick up Sticks that kids down here used to play 'cept it was just that (sticks) as opposed to shapes shown in the picture
Take care

No, I have not seen Jack Straws...or don't remember it if I did. Shipping can be horrible...when I mailed a quilt to my daughter in California, It cost $27! I might should have checked UPS but felt like there would be the cost of gas to drive there...it is probably 20-25 miles there...plus the time...so just went with US Postal Service.

Gill, waht is the body shaped item poking out of the bottom left of your fire picture? I'm worried.

Gorgeous photos! I can't wait for autumn to get here -- it will be a while yet although I think our weather has broken now and our really high temps are over. Going to check out Lakeland plastics -- it sounds interesting!

My raspberries were also a total right off this Year. Rob cut them all down right to the ground the other day. Loving the Fall colours

Beautiful colours in the landscape. I've never seen Jack Straws - looks interesting. I've been playing "Qwerkle' recently. We're all game players in this family. Sue

I do love a good fire! Looks wonderful. I find postage to the U.S. is also extremely expensive - not as expensive as it is to the UK, though.

I mailed a package to a fellow blogger in England about a month ago and it cost twice as much as what was inside, and it got there in about 10 days--They loved everything and it made the expense worth it!

I had Jack Straws growing up--I'd forgotten until I saw the picture. Thanks for the memory! :-)

As I left in the early 50's I don't remember that game.
I have not put the heat on nor the flannel sheets on the bed yet. Still have my window open and the house stays comfortable due to the whole place being insulated about four years ago.
Leaves are starting to turn colour here too.
You were asking the departure date of my trip, Oct 11th and it's coming up fast.
Have a good weekend.
