Grocery Shopping on Saturday.....

Thought I'd share with you with I bought when I went grocery shopping on Saturday and maybe some of you Canadians can take advantage of the deals as well.

I went to two stores today, No Frills and A & P. At No Frills this is what I bought:

The total for the above was $25.39, and I used $12.34 in coupons.

The 24 pack of water is on sale for $1.97 which is a great price. Dh takes a bottle every day for lunch .

16 Pack of Danone Yogurt for $3.99, there is a $1 off coupon on the box, making it $2.99 for 16 yogurts, again a great deal, again dh takes one for lunch each day.

Best deal moment!!!! Oasis Orange Juice on sale for $1.69, there are $1 coupons out there, look in the baking, jam and cereal aisles as they are in a booklet with other coupons. So I paid 69 cents each, and the expiry date on these is Jan 1st/09, so I picked 6 containers.

2 litre Dairy Oh! milk, was $4.59, I swapped a Silk Chocolate Drink FPC for the Diary Oh! FPC, so used the FPC and I got it for free.

Kraft Peanut Butter, $1.99, for a 1kg container. I can see peanut butter cookies in the future!!

PC Croutons $1.88, I know the same croutons are over $2.00 in other stores.......that is why I shop at the "basic" type of stores.

Dempsters Bagels, 6 pack, 99 cents per pack. The exact same bagels are "on sale" at A & P for 3 packs for $5.....it pays to check those flyers!!! Dh is taking a bagel with cream cheese each day for his lunch, as a change from sandwiches.

Shredded coconut no name brand$1.19 I want to make some ANZAC Cookies as mentioned on this blog

Bathroom Cleaner $2.99 minus 75 cent coupon = $2.24

Banana's just over 3lbs for $1.76, again dh takes a banana each day for lunch/snacks

Apples nearly 3lbs for $1.25, they were on sale for 49 cents per pound, and would you believe its cheaper to buy them in the store than pick them in the orchard..........that is crazy when you think about it? Don't you think?

Lemons 2/99 cents, not sure what I am going to do with those yet.

10lbs potatoes $1.47

I then went to A & P and this is what I bought.

That little lot cost $15.13, and I used $10.19 in coupons.

I got a pork roast for $6.28, and will make my crockpot roast pork recipe. There will be enough for four meals there.

Highliner Shrimp in sauce $2.99 each minus 2/$1 coupons = $1.99 each. This I will say is a treat for me, as dh does not like shrimp. So I'll make him a meat sauce for his pasta while I will have the shrimp..........can't wait to eat this!!

Large tub of Source Yogurt, $2.50 - FPC which was on some cereal I bought last week, so this was free. Going to have this for dessert one night with fruit and granola.

1 pack of Kraft Cheese Snacks, $4.69 , I had a FPC for this from Christie snack crackers, which I had got on sale for 88 cents, so that was a great deal. So again these were free.

3 pack Romaine Lettuce Hearts $1.99. I buy the romaine hearts, as one romaine heart is more than enough for us for a meal.

6 pack of Carrots muffins $4.49 - $1 coupon = $3.49. Why am I buying muffins, they are jumbo sized ones, and I bought some last week to try out in dh's lunches, and he seemed to enjoy them. So I saw these and I don't think I could make them for that cheap.

I should mention, dh's lunches include his breakfast as well, so I pack enough for two meals for him.

Now there are a couple of good deals on at Shopper's Drug Mart, they are Sunday and Monday only deals, so I will be taking advantage of those. The Kotex pads are on I have a couple of $1 off coupons and a couple of buy the pads get the liners for free. So all in all I will get them for 99 cents a pack. Plus I got a bonus 400 points coupon in the mail when I buy any Kotex product.

Their 8 pack of paper towel is on sale for $1.99, I personally only use this for cleaning windows and cleaning my stove top, its not strong enough for general use. Also the two pack of Pringles is on for $1.99 so will treat dh to a pack of those!!

Here is a link to the flyer.

Plus due to the fact I was a lazy bum, and I never wrote out a shopping list,I forgot to get margarine to bake with, so will have to buy that also when I am out.

As you can see it's not a balanced grocery shop, but I have food in the house that needs using up. All in all I should come in under my $75 a week budget.

**FPC = Free Product Coupon

Hello Gill
Lots of good deals there
Just outof curiosity - how long would you be in eachof the supermarkets when you are chasing deals like that?
Do you have it all planned before you go in the door or do some of these things take a bit of finding?
Take care
Cathy

Hello Gill,
It was so interesting to see what you buy as it is only myself and DH at home these days and I wish we could get our groceries down to 300$ a month which approx £160-£170! We spend a lot on fruit and now also are having to buy veg again as our allotment at the moment only has potatoes, all the greens have been used up. Like you we make a menu for the week, so this month I shall endevour to keep our grocery bill low!You have inspired me!

I so miss coupons. We always shopped like this when we went to the states - got premium stuff for next to nothing. We were champions at saving, I tell you.

In the last week, we have spent US$546 on groceries. I cringe looking at that number. That's a week! When we first came here, we spent $150 per month. Prices on stuff is just out of control, I tell you.

We have no coupons here, products are below standard (in my opinion) and if you want stuff from Canada/UK/US, you might as well sell your soul to buy them.

I envy you. I really, really do!

Hi, my son reused his poastib bottles. 1 bottle = 1 week. No more than that and it is washed and perfectly dried between used to cut down on bacteria nad chemicals from the plastic.
Also reduces the amount of plastic being used....
fantastic shop though...eveything is sooo expensive here compared tothe rest of Europe though. I will be glad wneh I can get mu food used up and nip to NI..still dearer than the UK but 25% cheaper than here!

i bought a brita filter and now don't buy bottled water. so i feel like i'm singlehandedly saving the environment one bottle at a time. it's a money saver too.
i feel quite smug now.

I was out for 90 minutes and that included going to the bank as well. Plus at No Frills there were long line ups as there were only a couple of cashiers on. I went a total of around 12 kilometers as well.

Sorry I haven't had time to reply to all your messages, I have been busy today.

It was interesting to hear how the Anzacs are progressing and to see the coconut packet.

OK, I'm moving to Canada just to get the water on sale at $1.97. That is unreal!!!!!!

Pretty impressive--but why do you buy water over and over again? Why not get a good water bottle or two and fill them up? If the water is that bad-tasting at your house, (which I doubt, or you wouldn't be able to cook with it) a water filter would take care of that.

If DH takes two bottles to work each day, a case lasts you two weeks, which means roughly 24 cases a year. At even $2.00/case you're spending almost $50.00/year on additional water and contributing tons of plastic to landfill.

That said, I am in admiration of your other savvy ways in saving money when you shop!

I love a bargain and am a keen frugal housewife too! Read your comment re Scarborough over on Cheshire Wife's blog! We are not far at all from Scarborough and try to get there at least once a month. We live just on the moors, outside Whitby. Have you been to Whitby? My favourite place.
