Photos from the Acreage

Well today I have lots of photos to share.

First one is of one of the garden beds. Its so overgrown I really don't know where to start, click on it to enlarge it, but what do you suggest? My first thought was to pull everything out and start again?

Here are a couple of photos of my veggie patch. So far I have potatoes, 4 yellow pepper plants, 4 cabbage plants, 4 brussel sprouts plants, 4 zucchini plants, a few salad onion plants. My dad is bringing me some lettuce plants next week. I know its not a lot, but it's better than nothing at this point!!

One of my goals is to dig out all the weeds between the veggie garden and the rhubarb patch, so I can have a lot bigger veggie patch next year. I think doing all the hard work this year will make it easier for next year.

This is my tree nursery next to my rhubarb patch. You may have to enlarge the photo to see the little saplings, as they are so small. I will probably be in a wheelchair before they reach any height!!!!

The three trees in a row are my fruit trees. I don't expect any fruit off them for a couple of years yet. I did see a nice Macintosh Apple tree at the garden centre the other day, so I might see if I can find the money to get that to add to my collection.
Dh has been busy cutting all the long grass with the brush cutter these last few nights. He has the south side cut, the west side cut and has made a start on the north side. Dd is coming over on Saturday, so I am hoping she will cut the east side, as she worked doing lawn maintenance for three summers while in University, so she is an expert at it!!
While cutting Kamikaze Hill on Wednesday I saw my first deer. Which turned out to be a blessing, as it took my mind off what I was actually doing, as that hill still terrifies me. Oh and the roofing guys did not turn up today {{{SIGH}}} so I guess I will have to get on the phone to "K" to see what's going on!

I'd be more inclined to just thin out your flower bed. Just to see what is in there.

Looks like pretty countryside you are surrounded with. Dh will have a lot of brush and grass cutting to do by the looks of it!

What a wonderful property you have and I'm sure you'll improve it even more.

A little at the time..saying that, it doesnt look like you have done a little...you have done loads and should be very pleased with youself.

I love visitng with you, your land is beautiful. For the flowerbeds, start with the grass. Once you get that out you'll have enough room to see what needs thinning.
Your rhubarb looks terrific - mine is almost ready! I have my Grandma's rhubarb, it's my inheritance. I'm a big fan of perennials; if you have room for asparagus it's well worth the wait.
You're taking the right course with expanding, too; do the heavy stuff this year if your back can take it, and next year you can do cleanup and turnover and it will go much cleaner.

Take it one day at time, don't get garden burnout! That's what I tend to do, but I hold myself back now...and yes, I'd pull it all out and start over...then take pictures and share with us! Your veggie garden looks like it is going to be a winner. We're pulling cabbage today, and the beans have flowered...the potatoes are nearly ready...ah, summer!

Hello Gill
I have to agree with Sandi - take it one day at a time
Clearing a bed this summer doesn't necessarily mean it will still be clear next spring. You'll have ot keep tending it to make sure the weeds don't invade it again.
I'm sure your time could be better used other ways - like sitting down and enjoying the lovely property you have just acquire lol
Take care
Cathy

I would leave the first garden for this year or thin out & plant some things elswhere. I probably would need to know what is growing there before chucking it all out. with plants being so costlyb at nurseries, I like to use what I have first and rarely buy something that isnt gonna come up next year.. OO if ya did thin out you could give some to a neighbor or friend too!

You have a wonderful place. Love seeing the pictures. You just might get some apples next year. One of our trees produce the second year. The other apple tree took 5 years to produce. I wish we could grow MacIntosh apples here, they are my favorite.

When I saw that first picture of your two stone bordered perennial beds, I just had to alert you to one very invasive species species you should deal with before it takes over everything. It's that green and white varigated plant in the bed on the left that has also spread to the bed on the right. It is called goutweed, sometimes erroneously called snow-on-the-mountain. It is very competitive and will take over everything. Either get rid of it or keep it strictly under control in its own bed. In northern Minnesota, it has taken over acres in a wilderness area. Your other perennials on the right could stand thinning and getting the grass out. But you have a lovely Acreage!(I'm a botanist and taught horticulture once)

I got tired just thinking about all the things you are trying to do. You have my admiration for taking it on. I am enjoying watching your progress (but, thankfully, just watching).
