Finally got one job crossed off my list.......

Now the only problem I encountered recovering these chairs, was there was no distinct central pattern that I could use to centre on the seat.  Regardless they look so much better than before and I hopefully have enough fabric left to cover the footstool I bought.

I would love a new kitchen but it's not in the budget.  One thing I had thought about doing was painting all the kitchen cabinets.  From what I have read the prep is very, very important.  I was concerned about durability though.  Has anyone done this and if you have do you regret doing it?  Also did you use latex paint?

Love the chairs -- I have recovered chair cushions before and it just makes them feel like new! The kitchen I have now is the only one that has stained cabinets -- all my other kitchens had painted cabinets and I always liked them because you could change them around if you liked. Yes, the prep is important and, from our experience, don't use Behr paint -- it doesn't stick well but latex paint is just fine. I don't know what it is about that brand that just didn't work for us. Just make sure your surface is squeaky clean, sanded and maybe even primed. Do a couple of coats, buy some new hardware maybe and voila! new kitchen!

You didn't say if you are painting over wood/melamine or over paint. If you are painting over paint the biggest thing is to KNOW what kind of paint it is. We repainted my kitchen 9 years ago. My MIL (who's kitchen it used to be) ASSURED me she used acrylic. Guess what? She used oil, I now have paint chipping off any where that gets banged by plates or something.

They make a primer that goes over oil and lets you paint latex. We really should have used that. But we trusted that my MIL knew what she was talking about :)

Nice job!!! I've been thinking about painting our cabinets too but I'm still researching it! The previous owners painted ours but it's this ugly off-white dirty color, and they did such a crappy job with no preparation. It will be quite a challenge!

I didn't do my kitchen cupboards, however, I did paint all the doors and baseboards in the house. They were an early 70's dark brown stain.
I gave them a light sanding, used an oil based primer, which will allow you to use a latex paint. Then put on two coats of kitchen and bath white paint. All of which I purchased from Home Hardware and This was done four years ago I am pleased to say it has held up very well.
It certainly brightened up my rooms.
I have not had any luck with Behr paint either.

We painted ours (not very high quality cabinets to start with). Hubby did a poor job on prep (despite his lovely wife who tried to convince him to do it right).

The paint has chipped. It isn't very "washable."

Really research it....and take the time to prep!!!

The chairs look grand. There are paints specific to painting cabinets. You can also choose to sand, prime and paint. It takes a bit of time but well worth it. Your local home/gardem center should be able to walk you through it. That's how I learned.

Nice job on the chairs. They look real smart. When you figure out the cupboard thing, come over and help me out with mine!

It was interesting reading the comments here...my SIL and brother did their cabinets last year...went from stain to paint and she loves them. It was a lot of preparation though...but it was worth it.

Love the chairs.

It's a year now since I painted my kitchen cupboards and they still look good. I sanded them and then used Cupboard Paint by International ( I don't know if you can get it over there). The paint has been very durable, and it was well worth the effort as I hated the cupboards I inherited with the house but the budget didn't stretch to replacing them.Definitely no regrets about painting them - the before and after photos are still on the blog on a page entitled 'Previously Finished Articles' if you want a reminder of how much better they looked!

The job you did on recovering your chairs is great. I need to recover my dining room chairs but frankly I'm hesitant as I have never done it before. We need a new kitchen too and I have never thought of actually painting the cupboards. The insides of the cabinets are worn and past their time so I think we're just going to have to wait a bit longer before we can afford to gut everything and start anew. I don't want to pour any more money into it until we can get it done properly and there is no way that we would know how to do that all by ourselves. I wish!

Love the chairs; painting I am useless when it comes to such matters unfortunately for me.

I painted all my kitchen cabinets and blogged about it. I even showed some of the colours on the chart. Of course you can chose any colour from any chart as it can be made up for you. Happy Easter. Sue and Petal.
