50 cent challenge........

We have a fabric store called Fabricland here in Canada.  I was looking for some zippers the other day so had to go there.  I think I have mentioned before but they have bags of odds and ends of fabric and notions for 50 cents.  I picked up two and I set myself a challenge to see what I could make with them.

This is the first bag:

This is what was in it.  Love the owl fabric, more of a canvas type of fabric.
Here is what I have made so far using the scraps of material.  Sunglasses case, using the owl fabric which was canvas, with the yellow interior.  The heads were partly cut off the top row of the owls ๐Ÿ˜

Barbie outfit using the lace/net, the strip of watermelon fabric, the rest of the yellow, part of the elastic and the blue ribbon.
Another skirt made with the watermelon fabric with ribbon trim.
A tiny change purse made for grand daughter so she can carry some change when at summer camp.

Another sunglasses case.  The outside of the fabric was a scrap of canvas I had on hand, the inner fabric though is from the bag.

So all in all a lot of things from this bag and still have a little fabric left.  I will post what I did with the second bag in a few days.

(I WENT AND BOUGHT SOME MORE OWL FABRIC BUT IN A DIFFERENT COLOUR, AS THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY OF THE TEAL LEFT, I'LL POST WHAT I MADE WITH IT IN A COUPLE OF DAYS!!)

Daughter's Sling Along Bag and Sunglasses case......

Dd wanted a case to put her sunglasses in when she saw the one I made and loved this Tula Pink fabric I had on hand.   As a reminder there is a link to the pattern on this blog post.  I used a heavier weight fusible fleece as the padding and just used the same material inside and out.  I will be showing you another couple of sunglasses cases I have made from fabric scraps later in the week, as this literally uses to pieces of fabric 9 inches by 9 inches, plus the two pieces of batting and one half of a zipper.

Now finding 25 inch zippers is a pain.  So I have found duvet cover zippers are 60 inches long, so you can get four sunglasses case's with the one zipper; BUT you only have one zipper head, so I buy three cheap zippers (usually 3 for $1) and use the zipper heads from them.

The one I used for this one was a 22 inch zipper and it was a pain to put in.

Then I made her a Sling Along Bag and it turned out lovely.  Also a lot easier to make the second time around.

Fabric I used was:

Grey Poppy was Sarah Watts Magic Forest for Cotton + Steel (I would not use this fabric for bags in the future, not enough body in it; too soft for a bag)
Coral was Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella #SRR512
Grey was Basic Grey Metropolis for Moda Fabrics #30565

Below is one of the ladies bag who took the class with me, in a gorgeous Tula Pink print. She hadn't quite finished it when I took the photo.

Here are my two beside her bag. Such a lovely selection of fabric there.

Sunglasses Case..........

I saw this free pattern a while back and thought it looked neat to put my sunglasses in.  It's by Pink Pony Design and is called the Raccoon Case.

I will say I ran into a couple of issues.  For some reason when printing out the pattern, it printed out too short, but wide enough.  I measured from top to bottom to make sure it was 9 inches in length, otherwise it will be too short.

****If you are having trouble finding a long enough zipper, I found a duvet zipper in WalMart which is 60 inches long, all I need are three more zipper heads and I will have enough zippers to make four of these cases***

Thankfully I used matching fabric, as I inserted my zipper back to front, so the quilted part of the fabric is inside....oops  It is still fine and very functional.
The fabric I used was Inkwell from the collection of Judie Rothermel for Marcus Fabrics.  I have had it in my stash for quite a while.

Thanks Pink Pony Designs, will be making more of these.

A side trip to Ikea........

Last week hubby had an appointment to see the surgeon as a follow up.  Practically across the road is Ikea, so we went there first. First th...
