Now for "R's" things I have made for her.......

"R" finishes work on Wednesday, as she had to use up some vacation time.  Her due date isn't until the end of the month, however she went early with the other two, so who knows.  I have made her a selection of things, just because.

I made her a "wet bag," for her diaper bag.  The inside material is waterproof, so it's ideal to put in wet or dirty baby items.

Ran up a quick burp pad, as we don't know if it's a boy or a girl, it's made in pretty neutral flannel.
I then made her this little clutch, it's big enough to put her cell phone, keys and some money in.  I love the material it's aptly named Bollywood.  I have had it ages and had "R" in mind when I saw it.
I don't remember what the inside fabric is and this "pattern" is one I made up.
I then did some cross stitch.  The bunny and birdie are for dd's new baby, but the elephant was sewn for "R" as she loves elephants.  The patterns are from Red Gate Stitchery, well worth checking out their things.
I have been doing cross stitch the longest, over 30 + years now.  Followed by quilting/sewing then knitting.  I think quilting/sewing is my favourite, followed by cross stitch, then knitting.

What is your favourite craft?

A job that would be better in the winter rather than the summer....

Got my sewing machine out on Wednesday.  Had to make 300 inches of binding to put on Our Little Munchkin's quilt.
Going to have to give the shop a call, as now my on/off button doesn't turn off on the sewing machine?  So I have to unplug it to turn it off.  It worked before it went in for repair.

Now as to what the title of the post is about.  After sewing the binding on the front of the quilt, it is all to hand sew to the back of the quilt.
In the winter this is a cozy job, having a large quilt sat on your lap and over your legs.  When it's warm out it does tend to get a little warm!!!  This is the hardest part of the quilt for me, as hand sewing kills my hands.

I bought some more yarn at The Knitting Basket, as Angie had a table full of yarn on sale for $3 a ball.  You couldn't go wrong with that price.  So I started to knit a dishcloth to add to my stash.  Not too taxing on the brain and it doesn't involve that Magic Loop thingy!!
By the way will be pulling out what I have done so far as there is a mistake in it!!  Nothing exciting, but I can see it, and if I can see it, everyone else will be able too.

A Huge thank you everyone for your opinions.

I spoke to Frigidaire and got no where...no surprise there.  They said it was because I keep my fridge at 1 oC and that is why I have the problem; which by the way is a lot of bull.   As I pointed out there must be a heck of a lot of people who keep their fridge at the wrong temperature as there are a lot of people who have posted on the internet having the same problem.

I have the appliance repair guy coming over on Wednesday to deal with the issue and he is going to give my fridge a thorough going over so that we can make doubly sure that it's not something else.

I also have my secret weapon....DH....he brought home a gun thingy that measures the temperature of everything.  Very interesting, and I will make sure the appliance guy writes it all down.  I turned my fridge up to 3 oC as per Frigidaire and the different items in the fridge ranged in temperature from 1 oC in the "cool drawer" up to 7 oC.  That is quite a difference if you ask me.  This is not the end of the issue, I will keep you updated.

As far as the warranty situation goes, I have until the 12th of June to sort something out.  I have more or less made up my mind to take out an extended warranty on the fridge.  That is an expensive item and as we have had problems already I feel it would be prudent to take out the warranty.  I am undecided about the stove, again that was over $2,000 for that so it may be worthwhile.

I am also dealing with window issues.  Three on the main floor need adjustments, so not a big issue, it's the two sliders in the basement which I am very worried about.  I cannot open them at all.  Dh struggled to open them, he struggled even more to close them and they are not fully closed and therefore not locked.  Dh reckons the house has settled and has moved the windows out of square.  Goodness knows how they are going to mend them.

I would have normally left this to year end, but feel this is an issue that needs dealing with sooner rather than later.  I have a guy coming on Wednesday to go over any deficiencies.  I am not 100% clear about the ins and outs of this, but when filling out the forms we seemed to have a number of things to note.  So it should be an interesting day Wednesday, what with this guy, the appliance guy and I have the site super coming over to look at the basement windows.

So today I am going to my sit and knit session to relax (I hope). I am on with the custard yellow colour now, so moving along nicely.  I do still however want to learn how to crochet.  I am also putting together another quilt top.  I will share photos with you on Wednesday.

When it's bitter cold outside........

You read a magazine and watch some tv.  On a side note no idea why I bought the O Magazine, as it's not my cup of tea?
Get a bit more of the baby quilt done.
Have a cup of tea and a snack and spend a little hours on the internet.
I did infact leave the house as I needed to get some material to bind the quilt.  So that means I must have got the quilt sewn together !!  My goal is to get it all done this week, so it's another job crossed off my list.

I also got gas (petrol) while out, paid 92.9 cents per litre Canadian.  How does that compare to where you live?

Finally feeling a lot better, BUT, nose feels as though it is stuffed up with glue....yes it's thick and yellow/green up there...TMI???  Voice still hoarse, and still not eating an awful lot, but that's no biggie as I need to lose weight.

Photos and music for a Friday.....

Here is a lovely photo of our Little Princess:

Was busy sewing on Friday and I enjoy listening to music as I sew.  I listened to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack:
I enjoy this Neil Diamond song, "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" from the soundtrack, although it was sung by Urge Overkill for the soundtrack, not Neil Diamond:

Another song I really enjoy from the soundtrack is"Teenage Wedding," by Chuck Berry.  This You tube video has John Travolta dancing in it!!

The second soundtrack I was listening to was "O Brother, Where Art Thou," so very different to Pulp Fiction.
My favourite song is "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow," by The Soggy Bottom Boys:

Followed very closely by "Down by the River to Pray," by Alison Krauss, who has the most fantastic voice:

It made for a pleasant day listening to those soundtracks while I was sewing:

Monday morning............

Had a busy weekend.  Dh was off all of the weekend which made a change.  He spent nearly all of it in the kitchen and he managed to get three bottom units installed, the counter top installed and the sink fitted.  I hope to have running water next weekend.  By the time dh gets in from work he is so stressed and tired, from the politics at work, he's fit for nothing.

One of the reasons it took so long to get just that done was that nothing was square or level.  However I am super pleased with how it looks so far and when he gets it all together I will take a photo.  I will say it's more luck than management that what I chose as finishes with everything matches ever so well!!!

With the weather being iffy (raining) on and off all weekend, nothing got done in the garden.  So I turned to sewing.  I have seventeen blocks all cut out ready for the final stitching .  Before I get to that point though there are a number of steps that have to be done.  All the mini squares have to be cut out.  Eight beige squares have to be sewn to eight patterned squares in two colours.  They have to be cut in half and pressed.  Then they all have to be trimmed and squared to make perfect 2 3/4 inch squares.  All that takes time; a lot of it.  I am planning on going to Bound To Quilt on Thursday where they have a come and sew session for $5 for the day.  That way I will be more likely to sit and sew for an extended period of time.

At the bottom of the main page you will see an icon that shows you how many Swagbucks I have.  Normally I have a lot, but I have cashed in for $50 worth of Amazon e-cards this month, so have depleted my total.  Normally I cash in just $25 worth, as that is normally all the Swagbucks I have, but I have been saving mine up.  If I remember rightly I think this will bring me to around $225 worth of Amazon e-cards since last December.  If you are already on the computer, why not earn some free Amazon e-cards at the same time?  If you do decide to sign up, I really would appreciate it if you could sign up under my link: http://swagbucks.com/refer/Appleby

If you already do Swagbucks write a comment and let other folk know how you find it, as it is a great way to earn free things.

Enjoy your Monday.

Interesting fact from my doctor........

As I have mentioned before I have allergies now.  Didn't start with them until we moved up here and when tested the guy thought it was probably due to some crop, and we think it is the yellow blooms on the canola oil crop.  However since then I have suffered with allergies more and more throughout the year.

Ontario is a hot bed for allergies for some reason and our doctor was saying that people from Western Europe who move over here normally take around 8 to 10 years living here before they become susceptible to allergies.  He was also saying people from California are the same.  So I guess I was lucky as we will have been in Canada 24 years at the end of this month.

This week's "Home of the Week," is lovely on the outside, but needs a bit of work on the inside.  The bathrooms and the kitchen need to be gutted, which surprises me, as I would have thought at  $2.4 million it would have all been updated?  It's got good bones and for someone willing to add a bit more money to it, it will be a wonderful family home.

This week's "Condo of the Week," is different with the three levels.  Also did you see the light "fixture" in the kitchen?  Also what's with the third level dining room?  Plus I wouldn't want to sit on that bench for any length of time.  I bet they paid a small fortune for that dining room set and its horrible.  I am not a huge fan of industrial lofts period and this one is no exception, despite it "only" on for $715,000!!

There's also a feature called: Condo Showdown: five sumptuous residences in Toronto luxury hotels; which you can read about here.  If I had that sort of money, I would not be buying a condo in the middle of Toronto!!

I finished dd table runner and thought I'd share a couple of photos.  It's around 58 inches long and 19 inches wide.  The photos don't do it justice.  This is the front:

This is the back:

Finally my goal is to finish up my kitchen post for tomorrow....but don't hold your breath!

Thursday, May 9, 2013

Sorry..........

I said I was going to post today about the kitchen and although I did make a start on the post, I didn't get too far.

I spent most of Wednesday outside cutting grass as it wasn't as warm and it was over cast.  The grass is on steroids and I swear is growing as fast as I am cutting it.  Anyhow I ran out of gas around 2pm, so had to come in.  By the way despite it being over cast and despite me putting sunscreen on I got burnt to a crisp!!!  I didn't wear my hat as it was over cast, but did have my sunglasses on.

We're not putting much of a veggie garden in, as dh is too busy with other projects to give me much help; plus his other knee is giving him problems.  He had the right knee scoped last August and the surgeon said at the time he could have his left one done anytime he wanted, but dh wanted to wait until he can't stand the pain.  He has/had a torn meniscus in both knees.  He needs knee replacements, but is much too young at the moment.  I would think he'll be having his second one done by the end of the summer, as the spasms are getting more and more painful for him.

I am also trying to get dd table runner completed before they come up on Saturday.  So last night I sat and hand sewed half the binding on, and will get that finished today.  I will take photos when I am done, really pleased with the fabric choices.  Must say my hands were complaining about all the hand sewing last night.

Dh was watching the Maple Leafs versus the Boston team hockey game.  The guy who sang the national anthems was good.  He sang at the last game and is a soldier.  He actually didn't muck it up like the professional/famous folks do.  Also the sheer joy and pride in his face when he sang was a Kodak moment to my mind.  Dh was saying one of his co-workers had got tickets for the game.  They were sitting in the nose bleed section, so right at the top and paid $250 a ticket.  What a flipping waste of money!!  The tickets are generally $90.  I will say that the Toronto Maple Leafs do deserve to win, only because they have the most devoted and enthusiastic fans out there; that support them through tick or thin - and it's generally on the thin side!!!

Gosh that was a lot of writing about hockey, a game I can't stand!!!

Finally I wrote another book review on a really good book called, Mennonite Girls Can Cook - Celebrations.  You can read it here.  The book is a keeper and would make a wonderful gift, even a great Bridal Shower gift.  As I said in my review, I'm not donating it; its going on my book shelf.

$100 doesn't go far in the quilting world....

I had $100 to spend in Christmas money so I decided to stock up on some Sulky thread that was on sale.  Unfortunately only certain colours were on sale, they are normally $8.99 a reel, when did thread become so expensive?  I use grey though to piece things together and I need the beige for a couple of projects I am going to be doing.

With the other $50+ I bought five metres of fabric.  I got everything on sale for $10 a metre as it's normally up to $17 a metre.  The store is closing down.  This fabric is for a certain project but I can't tell you what at the moment, but they are fun prints aren't they?
Even after buying everything on sale I still went over the budget by spending $101.68 :o(

On Wednesday afternoon I ventured into the attic to mend a pair of dh's pants and then decided to get my quilt block sewn for the mnth of December , as the club meets on the 10th.  I really like this block it's called Clay's Choice and I love the oranges.  The key to this block is how you press your seams, follow the instructions carefully.  I have never sewn with orange before have you?

Spent part of Wednesday afternoon preparing a couple of meals.  I bought another bag of reduced mix veggie, same as these mentioned here  made broccoli and cauliflower with cheese sauce, that we'll have with Pillsbury Country Biscuits and the carrots we're having with homemade pasties, mashed potatoes and gravy.  The liquid in the jug is the water from the dish I steamed the veggies in.  I like to water my plants with it when its cold.  Heard it was good for them?
Oh, and my laptop has died.............I hope this isn't what's going to happen all through 2013, things dying?

Sticker shock.......

On Sunday we were out and about.  One of the places I had to go was Michael's as I needed some new blades for my rotary cutter, which I use to cut out material.

I was shocked to see they were $49.99 for a pack of five blades.  Anyone who quilts how long have they been that expensive?  I will admit to not having to buy any for a while.  Also pleased I had a 50% off coupon, so only paid just over $28 after taxes after the coupon.  Which I guess is better than nothing.  Quilting isn't the cheapest hobby out there, that's for sure.

Question for the quilters out there: how do you dispose of your old blades?

I forgot to show you our latest acquisition from the charity shop:
It needs recovered and waxed/stained; which we are going to do in the New Year.  I think I paid $38 for it and dh uses it to put his feet on when sitting on the sofa.

Last week when I met Jane for lunch in Orillia, we went to a restaurant called Sixteen Front.  It was a really lovely place and here are a couple of photos of the place.  First the toilet paper in the ladies bathroom:
I love to see the toilet paper folded like that, always a good sign if you ask me!!

This is a photo of my meal.  Salad, soup and sandwich, just can't remember the flavours now!!
The photo I took of Jane's meal, which you can sort of see, was blurry, which was a shame.  If you are in Orillia for any reason both Jane and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal there and the whole ambiance of the place, and it's well priced.

Another great Christmas song:

Absolutely Ridiculous!

First how much do you think I paid for that little lot?  Answer down the page.........

Now back to the title of the post.  I went to the Post Office on Tuesday to mail Rose's blu-ray that she won. It came to $5.17, so far so good.  So I said well how much is it going to cost, as normally they add taxes to the shipment.  Discovered that they don't tax shipments to the States, but if I am mailing something within Canada they would have added 13% in taxes???

I am going to assume it's both the Federal and Provincial Governments fault for this stupid system, but it doesn't make flipping sense does it?  Mind you the whole taxing thing in this country is strange to me and very confusing for tourists and visitors to the country.  As just because it says $1 on the price tag, it hasn't added in the HST (taxes) like they do in Britain for example, so when you go to buy the $1 you discover it costs you $1.13.  Even after 23 years of living here I still haven't got it all down pat!!!

Now for the grocery question.  If you said $14.87 you win!!!  Kraft Canada had a deal where you paid $30 and you got a number of FPC (Free Product Coupons) for their items.  So all the Kraft products you see in the photo were "bought" with FPC.  I had a FPC for the Old El Paso taco kit, a buy on get one free on the two boxes of cookies and the potato chips and two packages of Fruit Gums, were bought with a gift card I got given.

I guess though I paid $44.87 if you factor in the $30 I paid, but the savings added up to $62.70, so I still came in ahead of the game and I still have a FPC for Amooza cheese snacks, that I have to pick up yet.

Also, just to clarify, regarding the quilt club.  The $10 is for the instructions on how to make each block, and the material for each block.  If you want to make a full sized quilt, you need the finishing kit, which costs around $170.  I will not be purchasing the finishing kit as it's not in colours I like.  I personally am not keen on the colourways of the finished quilt, there is a photo of the blue colourway on the bottom left of this webpage.  However if I wanted I could purchase the finishing kit, which I think is to finish the front of the quilt; then change the block colours to suit.

I have made a start on the baby quilt and this is proof:

I have a heck of a mess though on the kitchen table:

The striped fabric is the border and the back is white minky, which is a material I have never ever used.  I think if I can do an hour or two per day, I should get it done before the 6th of October.............I hope!!!

More of what I have been up too, with photos.

On Tuesday I decided to strip down the book shelves in the family room and clean behind them.  The story of how I came to own these shelves is on this post.  It took me a while to get everything off, cleaned and put back on, however it was a good job, jobbed as I say.

By the way the kids photos are their Grade 12 Graduation photos, which was 9 years ago now; gosh time has flown by since then and they have changed a lot since then.

On Wednesday afternoon, I headed into the attic to tidy some of my sewing stuff up and discovered a few things I had forgotten about. I also sat down and did a bit of machine quilting on this quilt:

I must have been on with this quilt now for nearly three years? I found the original post of when I started to make it back in January of 2009.  To the right of the sewing machine you can see a purple fabric box, I wrote about how too make it on this post.

We bought a new chest of drawers for the attic last month and it is in complete contrast to the one in the spare bedroom:

This one is from Ikea, although I did buy nicer handles for it from Lowes, as I didn't like the ones it came with.   The toiletries are for my brother when he comes over at the end of  the month.

I must say I am enjoying pottering around the house getting odds and sods of jobs done.  That's one good thing about the weather being colder and wet, you get more done inside of the house.

Tightening your nuts and Christmas........

I learned a new word on Tuesday  RE-TORQUE  I went to get my oil changed on the car and my winter tires put on.  When I came to pay for it, there was a sentence highlighted to say I need to re-torque my wheels after 100km.  So Patricia the delightful lady who works at the garage was telling me, either dh could do it, or I could bring it back to the garage and they would do it.  All the while I am thinking I have no idea what so ever what she is talking about, and as I have just had the tires put on, why would I be bringing them back?

Anyhow, I said to her I had no idea what she meant, and so she went on to explain to me that how the wheel can come loose etc, etc.  So I finally clicked what she said and said to her:

"Oh you mean my nuts may need to be tightened!"

She said yes, but they don't like to use that expression with so many men around!

As it's the first day of December I will feature a YouTube Christmas song each day, now that I have figured out how to post them again!

I promised I would show you what I have been busy with.  It's actually nothing exciting, just a Christmas wall hanging.

The front:

The back:

I did very little quilting on it, but it does look lovely.
The cookie recipe for Tuesday was Aartis Ginger Cookie With Garam Masala; now must say that didn't really scream out yummy to me, so didn't bother with it.  If any of you do make it let me know how it tastes.

Creativ Festival

On Saturday me and dd went to the Creativ Festival in downtown Toronto.  We had a really good day and here are some photos from there.  By the way no photographs were supposed to be taken, but I asked permission each time I took a photo.

Dd really liked these cards and wanted me to take a photo of them.

This woman is called Lennie Honcoop, and her work is just lovely she has a web site where you can order her product from: http://www.dutchquilter.com/index.html  I fell in love with the poppy quilt on her left hand side.  It will be in stock later in the year.
This next photo wouldn't turn around for some reason.  Anyhow dd bought the stamp kit to make these cards.  It's from a company called Local King Rubber Stamp  So we all expecting this Christmas Cards from dd this year.
I picked up this stamp kit called Thoughtful Flowers  We bought a starter kit each which consists of the stamp set, a background stamp I got one similar to this one  We got an acrylic block to put the stamps on and 40 sheets of glossy paper.  The lady demonstrating it was really good and very patient.  She even told us to buy crayola markers instead of the more expensive pens she was selling.  I am looking forward to trying this out.
There was this poor little alpaca there, who kept chewing on the bars???  Alpaca wool is very soft, I didn't know that, as I don't knit and neither does dd.  We avoided all the knitting boothes.
This photo is out of focus I am afraid but I fell in love with the material and the colours.
Mad About Patchwork is out of Ottawa and she was a lovely lady, again sorry about the quality of the photo. I picked up 16 fat quarters and 1/2 a yard of fabric from her booth.  She had the most gorgeous Christmas fabric see here that sold out on the first day (Friday.)

I picked some quilters basting spray at a great price from A Great Notion and they too have an online store here.

We could have spent a small fortune at the show as there was so much to buy.  We really had to limit ourselves on what we bought.

My poor old feet were killing me by the time we had finished walking around.  When we were entering the show, a pile of people were milling around as they had just walked up the CN Tower for charity.........me I was exhausted just walking from the subway to the Metro Convention Centre!!!  So the whole idea of me walking up to the top of the CN Tower was ludicrous, especially  when it's a well know fact I am allergic to exercise!!!

When we were leaving the show, we were met by lots of little kids and their parents who had just been to see the Wiggles in concert at the Rogers Centre  A lot had purple Wiggles t-shirts on.  All were very tired with having to walk three miles (slight exageration) from the Rogers Centre to Union Station.  Mind you there was one person whining more, as her feet were killing her......oh and she has a British accent and was with her dd who had no sympathy what so ever about her mother's sore feet!!

It's the same dd who does not trust her mother what so ever on the subway, as for some reason her mother who generally has a great sense of direction looses it when she gets on the subway!!!  My ears also wouldn't stop popping either on the subway this time, that normally doesn't happen.

All in all though a great day out, and a great mother and daughter day.....even though the daughter has no sympathy about her poor mother's ailments!!

They're back and a look back at an old post..

The mice are back, caught two overnight on Friday night.  We're a bit puzzled as to where they may be getting in, but figure it could be through the new basement.

I had a few packets of Ramen Noodles in the pantry that I decided to donate to shelter.  I also wanted to print a recipe to include with the packages that I had used before and is pretty easy to make and very budget friendly.  I found the recipe on this post I did a while ago with a number of other links of budget friendly recipes.  Thought for anyone who is relatively new to my blog, it may be worth a peek.

The kids came up on Saturday to do a couple of jobs for us and to celebrate dh's birthday, which is on Monday.  Dd made her dad a cake.

She did a good job, although I must say the cake was very sweet.  I am in charge of making her birthday cake in November, so will have to figure out what to do.

We all went out for dinner last night at a road side diner just down the road.  Place is a bit rough, but the food is good, and its makes a change from the usual chain restaurants.

I am going to be busy on Sunday, because as per usual I have left it to last minute in making my quilt blocks from the block of the month club.  The meeting is on Tuesday and I have stuff planned for Monday, so Sunday is the only day left to do them.........

Enjoy your Sunday.

A peaceful way to start the day:

and to make us all thankful we woke up today and we were breathing, as that is always a good sign, isn't it?

I couldn't  get the embeded code to work, so here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5IIXeR5OUI&feature=related

I took the tub off the rhubarb and discovered this underneath - I can see a rhubarb pie in the near future!!

Busy day again on Tuesday as I had the dentist in the morning and quilting club in the afternoon.

Hoping to have a day in the garden on Wednesday as the weather is supposed to be fine.

Hope you have good Wednesday and it's a lovely day where you live.

Finally the following was sent to me:
