A good day all round, I'd say..........

Tuesday, woke up to the sun shining, so a big 👍from me!

Painted some more trim and the door in the laundry room twice, so another 👍from me!

Added more stuff to the boxes to take to the charity shop; then took said boxes to the charity shop, so another 👍from me!

Took a box of empty wine bottles to the beer store to get the deposit money back on the way to the charity shop, again 👍from me!

Called in at Zehrs to pick up some food items and picked up my free jar of pasta sauce, that I won on the spin the wheel thingie on the app, so another 👍!

Sold something on Facebook Marketplace that had been listed since last September........yes I have decided to just leave things on there, as this isn't the first time something has sold months after listed, so $45 in our pocket and another 👍!

Figured that $45 would pay for the peel and stick tiles I want to purchase for the laundry room, another 👍

Hubby, sorted took out the hard drives from three old laptops so now we can take them to the electronics disposal at the dump 👍

So all in all not huge jobs, but good jobs done and the house is looking a little tidier, so that's a win, win!!

How was your Tuesday?

28 Things in 28 Days Part 1

So I said I would check in with you every 7 days to see how you are doing with collecting things to donate, and I would show you what I had collected.

I am donating three books.  Two I have read and one I picked up "The Joke" while on vacation, in the lobby (as someone else had left it and it was the only English book there), as I ran out of books to read and thought if I were desperate enough I could read this one.  I was never desperate enough......LOL

We cleaned out our sock and underwear drawers before we went on vacation and hubby had enough socks to last him a life time, so we decided to donate these brand new pairs that he wasn't keen on.

I cleaned out the toy box of all the baby toys, and decided to include this one toy that I got for free using points back in the day.  It's a great little toy and the kids all loved playing with it.

So those are my things for this week.  I will donate everything at the beginning of March.

How did you get on?

28 days, 28 items.............

I thought I'd give you a heads up on this, but during the month of February I am going to put one item a day that I do not use or need into a garbage bag, and at the end of the month I will donate all items.

I was wondering if anyone else would like to join in with me?

Some things to donate would be clothing from your closet.  Shoes, hats, belts.
Books, puzzles, games, toys.

From your kitchen, extra dishes, cups, cutlery.    Extra pictures, ornaments etc.

Extra craft supplies, like balls of wool, bags of notions.

Sheets, blankets and towels from your linen closet to give to the animal shelter.

Or you could put one item of food in a box each day for the month to donate to the food bank.  Even packages of pasta, ramen or a tin of soup each day would be a help and not too expensive.  Buying things on special would be a good way of adding too your box also.

I will give you another head's up closer to the end of the month, then during February I will post each day with what I have put into my bag.

Getting rid of 28 things in our house, would be helpful too kick start a Spring of decluttering.

Also for those Type A personalities; you know who you are....LOL  You could do a bag of things to donate and a box of food to donate.........

Is this something that interests you?  Do you have any other ideas of what to donate and/or to whom?

(P.S. giving you this heads, up will also give you a head start on gathering things together!!)

Instant Pot, decluttering and Netflix........

Remember my Instant Pot post from Tuesday?  It seems everyone who has one loves it and uses it.  I am still on the fence, so will wait until the Black Friday sale in November and revisit the idea.  I think I can manage to live without one until then.

I am still working away at decluttering.  I have been trying to sell a number of unwanted items online with mixed results.  We have a local Facebook site for our area.  I have to shake my head at some people.  They are all gung-ho wanting your items and then just muck you about.  Other people its a simple transaction that goes by without a fuss.  Having a yard sale is a no, no where we live, another one of those delightful rules we must abide by........

Loving Netflix still.  We are now on season 9 on Midsumer Murders, and every episode we say, "we didn't see that coming!!"  We have yet to figure the plot out on any of those episodes........LOL

My mam had a big birthday last week.  Here is one of her cakes; my younger brother had this one made for her:

When you ask her how she is; she always says "I'm fine."  And she is always cleaning, that's why there are all the cleaning items on the cake.  Love Mrs. Brown.

Kijiji, declutering and other delightful "stuff"

Had a little it of success on selling a couple more things on Kijiji.  Sold the dresser and the bed along with the mattress from the spare bedroom.  Still have the futon from the attic, and the table and chairs from the dining room to get rid of.  I also put up my Pflatzgraff Empire dinnerware on sale now that I have the Gordon Ramsey set.

There are 10 each of the dishes and plates and 7 mugs; not bad for $30.

Also had another clean through the drawers and closets and came up with this little lot:

I will drop them off tomorrow at the charity shop.  That will also mean I have get rid of my 25 things for the week.  I am of the mind that if I don't need these things why take them to the new house?  As the more we have to move the more it will cost us.

Has anyone watched the TV series Vikings?  What are your thoughts on it?  I would like to get it on DVD and watch it minus the adverts, but read some where it was very violent and blood thirsty?

There doesn't seem to be any let up of this bitter cold weather does there?  Then I heard on the TV we are in for a very cold March (SIGH)

We firmed up on our new home on the weekend and went to have a look around it to see the progress.  It has been weather proofed for a while with the frame up and the roof on and the windows and doors in.  They have now completed the framing inside.  Done the rough in for the plumbing and put all the duct work in for the heating.  The shower base is in, in our ensuite and the shower unit is in, in the downstairs bathroom.  We now have stairs to the basement.  They should be starting the electrical/wiring of the house soon.  All in all we are really pleased with the workmanship so far.

Just a couple of things........

Due to the fact that you can't see anything outside due to all the snow we have, I printed out a number of photos of the property in the Spring, Summer and Fall, and they are now laid out on the kitchen table for people to look at.  I may get one of those photo frames which holds multiple photos when we move and hang some of those in it.

Things are progressing well with the house sale.......can't say much more yet!!!

I also tackled the closet in our room and filled up two garbage bags to donate.  Both dh and I have been hanging onto clothes that we hope to fit into "one day."  Now as you know as well as I do, that will never happen, with me being "allergic" to exercise.  Again that could change in the future who knows!!!

So pleased to say I have exceeded my weekly getting 25 things out of the house for this week again.

More decluttering

I am still on the decluttering kick and yesterday took two bags of doggy supplies to the pet store to donate to the shelter.  I had bought things like a bed, toys and dishes etc. when we got Millie.  Do you remember Millie?  I wonder how she is doing?  My heart is not into getting a new dog any time soon, so some other animals may as well get the use of those things, plus it's two more garbage bags of things removed from our basement.

We also sold another item on Kijiji which was a bonus and means another box removed from the basement. I would love to say that this means the basement is quite empty, of course it isn't but it is tidier than it was.  I still need to go through all the Christmas decorations yet.  I will definitely be doing that before we move that's for sure.

Our little Princess is 13 months old today and is walking now.  Took her a couple of weeks to figure out she can get around faster walking than crawling, but she got there in the end.

If you want to see more of our house, Sarah has published a post on her site here.  Look under the English Country Stone House section.

I sound like a broken bloody record.......

this weather is just plain depressing.  The wind has been blowing a gale up here, which in turn blows the snow all over the driveway and blocks us in.  Dh has a pick up truck so he can get out, but my little car will not drive over the snow drifts.  So I had to blow out the driveway again on Tuesday and know for a fact it will be to do again today.

Did some more decluttering and have a lot of things to drop off at the charity shop today.  I am getting rid of a lot of older Christmas lights.   I also got a lot more things put away in the kitchen.  It is looking so bare, but clutter free is best on the counter tops right?

Finally I know you have all been wondering about my legs........I made the first pass with the razor on my legs on Tuesday.  Figure by the end of the week my legs should be hair free!!!!  Already feeling a bit colder down there!

All systems go.......

We now have a date of when we are putting the house on the market.  February 7th should be the date.  So we need to have everything done and sorted out by the 2nd of February, as I am assuming Sarah our real estate agent will be popping by on the 3rd (Sarah if you are reading this could you let me know?) the photographer will be in on the 4th or 5th and the house on the market on the 7th.

Sarah said we should put it on sooner rather than later, as there is very little inventory in our price range and there are qualified buyers out there looking to purchase.  We have had good luck in buying and selling houses in February BUT the weather has never been as bad as what we have at the moment.  I spoke to our farmer friend and he said he would pop by on Friday to have another go at clearing out the driveway so we can get right around the whole "P" shape of it.  As at the moment the curve is all blocked in.

So this week is more cleaning and decluttering and some reno work.  Dh has made a start on putting the baseboard together in the dining room.  That is a difficult job and one I can't finish until he has all the parts up on the wall.

As it is bitter cold here I cannot clean the outside of the windows.....yes I have tried.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean the outside of windows when it's crazy cold?

I need to call in at the grocery store and see if I can scrounge up some boxes as well, as I am running short and have more things I want to pack away.  I really do not want to have to buy flipping boxes.  Do need to purchase packing tape as that is in short supply around here as well.

Otherwise things are pretty quiet around here!!  I missed the email for the book review for last month, but did manage to order some for the coming month.  I have been busy with my Swagbucks after a quiet December of it.  Hoping to get enough saved up for three $5 Amazon e-cards before the end of this month.  Did manage to cash in for the usual $25 in Amazon e-cards this month already.  Not sure what I am saving up for at the moment. If anyone wants to join up to earn free things click on this link.  If anyone has any questions please ask away.

Did manage to put $51 in my 52 weekly pot this week.  I am on schedule with that but not doing it week 1 through 52, just crossing off what money I have against what week there is on the calendar.  You can read more about that challenge here.

It's been a while......

since I featured one of the "Home of the Week," posts. This $1.9 million Edwardian home shows so much promise from the outside but when you see the inside all you want to know is "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???"  Seriously why decorate an old home like that?  It could be worse I guess they could have ripped out ALL the period features?  I'll pass.

The "condo of the week" is on for $620,000.  I am not "into" these industrial loft like accommodations, though will say the polished concrete floor does look nice in the photos.  However what it looks like in real life may be totally different.  Never had polished concrete floors, so no idea how durable they are?

Love this photo of Miss Nora.  She's probably thinking to herself; "gosh it's hard work being a baby!"
She's starting to sleep a tiny bit longer through the night.  Dd tries to have her in her crib by 8 pm to 8:30 pm on a night and she can sleep for 5 or 6 hours.  Then she'll be up for a feed a couple of hours after that and then is generally up again a couple hours after that.  Miss Nora is coming up ten weeks old now.

Then finally just when you think my life can not get any more exciting I spent a delightful half hour emptying partial cans of old paint into other cans so I can put the empty cans into the recycling bin.
I ended up with putting five empty cans into the recycling bin and now have a total of six cans in the garage waiting to go to the hazardous waste drop off in May.  Still have a couple more cans to go through but they can wait for another week.

Dining Room photos.......

Immediately to the right when you come in through the front door of our house is a room that would have been used as a parlour or front sitting room when the house was first built.  Over the years this room has been used for a number of things, including a parlour, dining room, office and bedroom.  When the home stager came through the house she suggested turning it back into a formal dining room.  Which is what we have done.  The door is called a Dutch Door and is pretty common around here.
Although there wasn't much to do in this room other than, repair some plaster work, paint and do a little prep on the floor.
I hung the sunset and sunrise photos in this room.
As you can see in this photo there is another door in the room.
It's a pocket door which leads into the main floor bathroom.  One of the prior owners couldn't manage the stairs so they turned the parlour into a bedroom and made the room behind it a bathroom.
We had the mirror on the table in the bathroom.  It was much too small so the home stager suggested using it as a mirrored tray on the table.  Which believe me it's a lot cheaper than buying an actual mirrored tray.  So if you have an old mirror hanging about put it in the middle of the dining room table with some candlesticks on it.
We had to buy a table and four chairs which cost us $226.  Luckily we had another couple of chairs hanging about which go well.  The other major expense is we were missing around 16 feet of baseboard.  No idea what the prior owners had done with it?  The problem is this is not just any old baseboard.  The baseboard is over 14 inches high and comprised of three pieces to make up the height.  We have ordered it from the guy who redid the kitchen and it has been a challenge for them to make it.  We should be getting it back this week; I dread though to think how much it's going to cost.  Anyone with a carpentry background will know how labour intensive this would be to make.
One of the joys of this house are the deep windows we have all over the older part of the house.  This room is also cool so cyclamens grow like mad and do well in this room.
I am not sure how much more has to be declutttered from this room?  Also not sure if I should set the table to look as though we are ready for afternoon tea?

Big weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

We had our real estate agent over yesterday, her name is Sarah.  She wanted to pop by and see our progress.  She seemed pleased with what we have done; as we are.  During the course of the conversation the home stager situation came up.  As I explained at the beginning she charges $125 an hour and I wasn't in love with the woman.  Anyway, Sarah said there was no need to bring her in as between us we could do the rest to get ready for the photos.

Immediately I felt so much lighter and happier. I must have been worrying deep down about having to deal with her again.  Its not that her suggestions weren't right, believe me they were very, very helpful, but she was just a very overpowering person to deal with.

So we have decided to put the house up for sale around the middle of February, but it could be earlier or later depending on the weather.  Also our driveway is an ice skating rink and very dangerous, and there is no salt to be found anywhere at the moment.  I got a lead there should be some coming in the beginning of next week at our local Home Hardware so will call them.  We are putting ashes down at the beginning of the driveway as dh put his brakes on the other morning and went straight out into the main road.  Luckily it was just after 4:30 am so there wasn't much in the way off traffic.  We just don't want anyone falling on our driveway and suing us!!

We are not finished all the jobs, should be done 90% of them in the next week or so.  The mud room will be done by the end of next week.  I will then be able to take photos for you.  We will then be waiting for the trim to come back from Hope Acres and our kitchen table also from there.  Hopefully they will be back by the end of the month.

The house just then needs to be primped and polished and the final staging and decluttering done.  I do feel as though I can see the light at the end of the tunnel finally.

So that is where we are at the moment with the house.  I also got rid of another bag of clothing for another 25 things to leave the house this week.

Still decluttering and a blast from the past.....

Found a home for the 100+ Prima magazines.  I dropped off a pile of stuff at our charity shop where I participate in the window auctions and mentioned to her about the Prima magazines and she said please drop them off there.  Also have a pile of This Old House magazines and she wants them also.  So I need to drive up there next week and drop everything off.  It is very liberating getting rid of all this stuff and it less to move to the other house.

I do need to go through the Christmas stuff and donate a lot of that as well.  Wrong time of year though to donate Christmas things, but again I don't want to move it.  I have decided less is more though!!!

One thing I do when painting is play music on the tv. This is one song that I thought was so nice:
Even the picture is lovely.

Do you remember this song?

Answering a couple of questions......

Why don't I just burn the paper I am shredding?

Well it clogs up the fire I find.  As per the waste people I can put the shredded paper in our organics bin:
So it may take a few weeks to get rid of all the bags but it's as good a place to get rid of it I think?

Got a lot more shredded on Saturday and got a couple of drawers cleaned out as well.

Have we been house hunting?

Yes and no.  We know what subdivision (estate) we want to live in.  We have been to many open houses so we have figured out what model home we like.  However until we have a firm offer on our house we won't go house hunting in earnest.  Now as this subdivision is for "Active Adults," I can safely say that there is always some houses up for sale due to people dying, going into retirement homes, just moving because, moving down south to the warmth or moving up north to their cottages.

At the moment there are a couple of houses on the market that we like, so we know we will find something.  Within the next month the housing market will pick up, so we are expecting more houses to come on the market.

How does the decluttering challenge work?

All I am doing is trying to remove 25 things per week from the house.  So that at the end of the year you will have 1300 less things in the house, whether it be clothing, books, Christmas Decorations and just stuff you don't use anymore.

I need to be more consistent in removing things that I don't use and one of my big things is magazines I have a habit of hoarding.  Need to find a home for over 100 Prima Magazines; any ideas?

As it's freezing cold still it was a good day for a stew on Saturday.  So I made Lentil Stew with garlic bread for supper.  Click on this link for the recipe. Both Vegetarian and Vegan friendly.
I also managed to visit a few blogs on Saturday, hoping to visit many more today!!

Lets talk Toilet Paper!!!!

Which photo is the correct way to put a roll of toilet paper on the holder:

A:
B:
In my humble opinion A is correct, as it controls the amount of toilet paper you take.

Thought that was a fun thing to think about, don't you think?

Bitter, bitter cold day here again today, so I am going to clean out some files in the filing cabinet today and clean out the paid bill drawer.  A dear friend of mine Cheryl, had a goal of throwing out/getting rid of 25 things per week from her house last year.  She said it made a big difference, so I will attempt to do the same this year.  I am putting together a box of things to donate to the charity shop and so far must had at least 25 things in there.  Regardless it's a day to hibernate.

If its bitter cold or stinking hot where you are today, what are your plans?

Recap on February.......

Had a few goals to achieve in February and did okay on some but not on others.

The decluttering goals, I completed the first two no problem, but faltered on the second two and only did bits and bobs on those two.  As soon as my cast is off I will complete the basement and the kitchen decluttering.

I posted seven ads on Kijiji and sold three of the items during the month of February for a total of $35.  $10 went to pay for the table at the township Garage sale and the other $25 went into Molly's food jar.  I am putting $15 a week in there for her food; so have $60 in there now.

I ended up increasing our mortgage by another $10 a week.  Haven't had any paperwork from the bank yet to see how many weeks we have knocked off the life of the mortgage, will let you know when that comes.  I don't think I will be increasing it any more, until dh finished paying CPP and EI in June then I may add that money to the mortgage.

I am starting the month of March off with $180 in my birthday pot, $220 in my Christmas pot, $200 in my "other" pot which should be labeled "firewood pot," as that is what I am saving up for now and $85 in my garden pot.  The sealed jar pot is a lot heavier thanks to dh as he is putting his change in there regularly.

The "other pot," was dipped into this past month to pay for the wedding gift and to pay for our tickets for The Drawing For Art fund raiser that we go to each year.

As you can see by my figures on the side bar I went over my monthly $300 grocery budget, however I have stocked up on a number of things and have meals pre planned and made for the first week of March.  I also boosted my Shopper's Drug Mart points balance and now have enough for one $250 mega redemption.  My goal is to have enough points for two redemption's in December, so I am on track for that.

I cashed in enough Swagbucks during February for $25 worth of Amazon e-cards and my balance in my Amazon account is sitting at $70.  It is the swagbucks tv that is getting me all the points, as well as the searches.  My goal is for another $25 for March as well.

I also managed to save an extra $200 in our savings account, which was good, as we spend such a lot on renovation expenses. For the month of March, it will be just regular savings.  We will be filing our taxes this weekend and are both in for refunds, so that will come in handy for projects we want to do this year.  I think mine is all of $200, if that!!!!  However it's better than owing money to my mind.

Grocery shopping, I am hoping to keep that to the usual $75 a week.  Continue putting money in my pots on a weekly basis.  We don't have anything big happening this month, that I am aware of, so everything should just be usual monthly expenses.  It will probably cost us $400 to fill up the oil tank again for the heating oil.  Hoping it will warm up a little though by mid month so I am able to go a bit longer without having to fill up the tank.  I should say that it costs $400 to fill up half of the tank as I only let it go half way down before filling it.

I notice gas prices are starting to rise, so need to get my gas tanks filled up for the start of grass cutting season and filling them this week while I can't drive my car might be a good thing as I don't need to put gas in my car.

I may re-advertise the four things on Kijiji again, as you never know they might sell, will also see if I have anything else worth posting on there.

We have put our search for a second dog on hold for a few weeks until my hand is stronger.  We had applied for a Basset Hound called Maude, but someone else got her, she was a puppy mill dog.  Plus I need to save up around $400 for that, which I haven't done yet.

So that's basically it for me on what happened during February and what I have planned for March.

Are you all organized for March?

Decluttering and home of the week.......

So I cleaned out my cleaning and vase cupboard on Thursday.  If I do nothing else, I won't be bothered as this was a major job that had to be done, as it's a bit like the freezer; things go in there never to be seen again!!!

Before:
001
All the things out of the cupboard:
002
Cupboard washed out and everything put back in:
004
Now if the amount of cleaning products is anything to go by, I should have the cleanest house around.......I wonder what has happened? Will say I was pleased to find two pairs of brand new rubber gloves which I didn't know about.

This week's Home of the Week is mine, if I ever had $5 million!!!  It's not very often I actually love a house, but I love this one.  I could move in without doing anything much to it, other than probably painting the little girls room some other colour than Barbie pink!!  Will say I am surprised they didn't stick a swimming pool in the back yard, as that is something you would expect to have at that price range?  Overall though, it's great, even down to the movie theatre in the basement; and I don't watch movies that often!!

Now the Condo of the Week, is a whole different ball game. It's not a bad condo, I have seen a lot worse, and the price is reasonable for downtown Toronto, it's just the location.  I think sketchy would be a polite way of putting it, and I wouldn't want to wander around there after dark.  However this article tells you about the good and the bad of the area and it's an interesting read.  Back to the condo though, there is something missing for me, it feels too stark and urban, but then you're buying and living in an urban area, so that's what you get.  Just not for me.

Maggie asked about freezing bananas yesterday.  All I do is throw over ripe bananas in the freezer, skin on and use them in banana bread/muffins.  Just pull them out of the freezer and let them defrost a bit and the skin comes right off, just like it does with frozen whole tomatoes.

Christine asked about the freezer list.  It's an Excel Spreadsheet that I save on my computer.  You could do it as easy in Word, just make a couple of tables and fill them in.  I find Excel easier, although we have just updated our software to Microsoft 2010 and I am still finding my way around it.

Pat, I went and deleted your comment, sorry.  You were asking about cream cheese, I agree it is not as good after it has been frozen, but when you're mixing it in with something else I don't find it an issue.

And finally, if anyone has any bright ideas what else to do with over ripe bananas other than banana bread, I am all ears!!!!

Decluttering.........or lack of it.......

Not sure what's happened, but I have lost my "mojo" for decluttering.  That's not to say I haven't done any this week, I have just not with the same gusto I did over the last couple of weeks.

I am working on week three of the four week decluttering plan and according to my intitial plan that I posted here, I should be cleaning out the kitchen cupboards.  However I have been working on both the kitchen and the basement.   I don't have photos as honestly there isn't much to show yet.  However I have managed to sort out three boxes down the basement.  One is still full with things I still want and have to find a home for.  One box is full of stuff for the garage sale, and one box was flat packed and thrown out and all the things thrown in the garbage.

I cleaned out the under sink cupboard so that was good, not that there was anything to throw out there as I had just cleaned it out not too long ago. The same goes for the cupboard where I keep our everyday china, I managed to throw out a couple of things but I had cleaned it out not too long ago.

I then decided to use the excuse of having to call Jane to see how she is doing..........she fell and broke a bone........to have a break.  After talking to her for a little bit, I decided it was time to sit down and read a book, as I had no desire to do any more decluttering.  Hopefully on Wednesday I will have more of a notion to do some more decluttering.

Are you in the mood for decluttering/Spring Cleaning this week?

A different sort of a day on Monday......

Dh was called out to a breakdown on Sunday around 5:30 p.m. and arrived back home around 8 a.m. on Monday morning.  Needless to say he was tired and after he had something to eat he went to bed.  Dh used to work shifts when we were in England but has worked day shift all the time in Canada, other than when he is called out.  This house though is not conducive to someone sleeping and me pottering around.  My best bet is to stay in the family room extension, as our bedroom is above the kitchen and you can hear everything in the kitchen when you're in the bedroom.

I went down the old basement and cleared out a box and did an inventory of the freezer, but decided that might be too noisy.  So I ended up sitting in the family room, drinking cups of tea and working on the computer, reading a book and watching tv.  Not a bad way I guess to spend a Monday morning.

It's Valentine's Day today.  We don't do much other than exchange cards in this house.  Dh gave me some scratch and win tickets and won $6, so that was nice of him.  What do you do for Valentine's Day?

Short post today, nothing much to say for a change!!

More decluttering and a change of plans......

So this week's project is the living room.  I have been making excellent progress, but there has been a slight change of plan.  Our township is having a Garage/Yard sale on May 5th, so I have decided to book a table inside at a cost of $10, I have sold one of the VCR Players on Kijiji for $10 so that will pay for our table at the garage sale.  What that means for the living room is the table we have in their is now the holding place for things I want to take to the sale.  So the room doesn't actually look as tidy as I would like BUT I have had a good sort out, thrown a lot of stuff out, recycled stuff, and am going to try and sell some things.  Plus all the boxes in there have been emptied and sorted out.  So here are all the photos.

Some of dd and hubby's wedding presents.  All those green boxes are part of dd dinner service, this pattern. There are more wedding presents up in the attic.
This is the table with all the "stuff" on it for the garage sale and what is on sale in Kijiji at the moment.
