Went down the town on Wednesday........

Had to go to the library:
It turns out you have to renew your library card every year with our library.  All to do with funding and how big the membership is?  When I got in there, it also turns out you can do this over the phone???  The woman I spoke to last week forgot to mention this?

Next to the library is the Circle Theatre:
This is our local movie theatre.  It has quite an interesting history to it; you can read about it here.

It is one of those old fashioned movie theatre's with only the one screening room.  I have been told it has really comfy old fashioned seats and the whole ambiance takes you back to the 1940's, but with modern comforts.  They hold special screening's, along with birthday party's and the odd play.  Not your typical movie theatre.

Why I am even bringing any of this up, is I have NEVER watched a movie in a movie theatre in Canada.  We will have been in this country 26 years at the end of May.  It's just not a place I would ever think of going.  I'll watch movie's on dvd's or on tv, but have no desire to spend a bundle on a movie in a theatre.

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to see they only charge $7.50 admission in this movie theatre.  I was expecting it to be a whole lot more?  What is the normal admission price?

Do you go to the movie theatre often and what does it generally cost for a trip there?

(sorry about the quality of the photos, the sun was shining directly into the camera and it was freezing bloody cold, so didn't want to be out any longer than I had to be.)

Also I have booked a knitting lesson for March 12th......more to follow on that tomorrow!!!

I love this little glimpse of your town! Your movie theatre sounds like the Lyric in Carmarthen ~ a fully restored Victorian theatre now used for all sorts of functions, including Panto! I loved going there. My nearest theatre is too far away for me to go, but some films just have to be seen on the big screen.
Go on, go and see what it is like!

I'm not a big movie goer, just if there is something that I really want to see. It's quite an expensive night out now in the UK, £8.95 at the weekend, probably a £ or so cheaper in the week. Then of course you have to add popcorn, or in my case nachos on to the bill. you can very easily rack up a £30 bill :-O
I think that's why most people wait for the 2 for 1 Wednesdays, Orange used to do them before they changed name.

Your movie theatre is really nice! I personally do not go often to the movie theatre but my 14 years old daughter does...the price is around 12.00/16.00 Euros ( it depends on the movie... ).For what concerns the library card, we are lucky as there is no need to renew it. It lasts forever!!

movies here are are around ten dollars. I don't go often, I am not a big movie fan myself, can't sit still!

We still have older movie theatres like that around here... but, like you, we haven't gone in ages. It's been at least a decade.

Knitting lesson? Cool! My daughter is an avid knit wit herself; enjoy!

Oh knitting you are going to love it. I taught myself with my Alzheimer's Mom it was/is a great hobby to pick up. Good luck. Nice little theater.Hug B

I don't go to the movie theatre either, too expensive and way too loud for me! I'll watch the odd movie on tv but I'm not really a movie fan at all. We have to renew our library cards yearly too and found out that if you don't use it, it expires. Hubby has a habit of using mine so his gets left alone.

It's nice to see quaint places like your movie theatre that date way back. Historical places are always interesting. I don't go to the movie theatre much; too expensive. Plus, I prefer watching movies at home; much more comfortable.

I won't pay the normal price for going to a movie either...it has been years since we have been. Even to the cheap places...there are always a few places that show new movies for a couple dollars....but their snacks are still outrageous.

I had rather watch in the comfort of my own home anyway. Where I can pause it and go to the potty, or get a drink or whatever else I want to do.

We've been a couple of times in 25 years...the last time about 6 yrs ago...hated it! The sound is so loud that it makes me feel physically sick..so we don't go...besides,the nearest place to us is one and a quarter hours drive away.

Looks like you live in a very cute town! We have to renew our library cards here every year as well, and we can do it over the phone as I found out last year. In our town, we have a movie theater where tickets are around $8-$10 depending if it is regular or 3D. What really gets you is the price of popcorn and the drinks if you get them at the theater. We go to the movies maybe once or twice a year.

I rarely go to the movies, and then it's usually because we had a gift card, so I don't know what it costs anymore. Too much, I know and usually too loud for me.

Can't wait to hear more about your knitting lesson!

I go to the movies from time to time, depending on what's playing. The nearest is a rep theatre about a ten minute walk from home. If I want to see a current movie, I'll pay about ten dollars for the regular version. For some reason, theatres charge more for 3D, but watching in 3D makes me feel nauseous.

We occasionally visit the cinema in the UK but I am similar to you and prefer to my home comforts.
I've heard that cinemas actually make a loss on showing the films and all the profit is in the food and drinks you buy but that may be an urban legend.

I don't watch movies in theatres anymore. I don't like how loud they are and how close you sit to the screen. Plus it's expensive. I have friends who go all the time though.

My friend, Dave and I go at least once every weekend. We like the energy we get from all of the other patrons. The laughing, fear and also the odd sniffle when the tears start to slip down the cheek.
When we go to the multi screen theatre's we pay $18.00 for the both of us, (seniors rate). When we go to the Western University theatre, the cost is $14.00 for both of us. We never, ever buy popcorn or a drink, the price for then is jut hi way robbery.

Really enjoyed the link to the Circle Theater and what a history it has had and hiw fortunate it has been restored. There was also a single movie theater where we lived on the VA eastern shore for 12 years. It was in the next town and open only Fri-Sun. Prices were $6 for adults at first then rose to $7. We have gone to multi-screen theaters here in Nashua, NH but nit often and there is a senior rate of under $8 but we dont go often.

That's interesting Gill, I've been thinking of taking knitting lessons lately. The old movie theater sounds nice. It's been a while since I went to see a regular movie so not sure of the price now.

I too love to see your town. We have to renew our library card every year too and it costs!! We go to the movie theatre often. It's one thing the 3 of us really enjoy doing.

Hi Gill, I love this post, your photos are great. I used to go to theaters but I don't anymore. The lowest cost for going to a theater here in Montreal, Canada is $2.50. But this is a "dollar cinema", and they sell small popcorn, drinks, etc. for $1 each as well. The owner of the cinema did this because he realized that all the theater prices were getting ridiculous and he wanted to make it affordable for people. :)

I am so-so on going to movie theatres - some movies I'd like to watch in cinema, but most I prefer to watch at the comfort of home and food an all that. But DB prefers cinema as it's easier since we aren't living tgt yet. So that's money down there...

We very rarely go to the cinema. Last time was on holiday at Broome in Western Australia http://www.broomemovies.com.au/index.html
It is a historical open air theatre with deck chairs like I have seen on English shores. It was the holiday of a life time so worth the expense of $17.50 a ticket. I have heard it can be dearer in city cinemas.
The time before that i cant remember.

When I was a kid, going to the movie was what we "did" -- that and going to the mall. When I was dating all we did was go to the movie but once we got married and had children I can count on one hand how many times we have been to the movie. I prefer watching them at home where I can pause it for a potty break. My daughter and her husband went to a movie last weekend and the admission was $21 for the two of them. I would rather spend my money elsewhere although the idea of actually going "out" someplace sounds good. I like your town -- seems so homey and safe. I could handle that very well. We have to renew our library cards a well but there is no charge. I need to go to the library more for sure. I have also taken to making donations to the library of books that I no longer want. They are very appreciative.
