A memo to my Christmas Cactus..........

Look at you, you are beautiful again, all those super pink flowers.  However I have just one little request of you, would it be possible for you to flower one of these days at Christmas time, just like the season you are named after?

I have yet to see you flower at Christmas, you generally flower in the Spring and Fall.  Would you prefer to be in another room?  Would that help?  Regardless though, I am just pleased that you do keep on flowering for me.  Keep up the good work!!

Aren't plants supposed to thrive if you talk to them?  I read this article and it says it does help them grow!!

As I was watching the news on Tuesday night the word "Flurries" popped up in the weather forecast..............I am so not ready to hear that word.  We still don't have our snow fences up yet and dh hasn't tried the snowblower yet.......

This was Tuesday nights sunset:

Has anyone been to the Creative Festival in Toronto?  I was thinking about going, and wanted to know if it was worth while.

Oh I had a Christmas cactus for years & gave it to my mum when I went abroad.
Yesterday a lady brought two cuttings into the chariy shop & said hers only ever flowered in October !

I love this chatty post, it made me feel quite at home visiting your blog. The Christmas Cactus has always been a mystery to me, in fact some UK growers are now calling it Easter Cactus. I get so confused...smiles.

Hey, I hear you! The word "cold" has popped up here. Not ready for that either. . . . . . .Thanks for the Christmas cactus picture. Makes me think of my grandmother. She had some beautiful plants just like that one. She talked to hers, too.

I am hoping my cactus will bloom this year also.
I have been to the Creative Festival but not for a few years.
I am coming to visit my daughter this weekend and we are going to the Festival. I am looking forward to it.

My Christmas Cactus was renamed the Thanksgiving Cactus many years ago.

I have been to the festival once and had a great time - I won't be going this year because I don't have spare money and I cannot go without buying something - there is SO much there!

Gill,
My Christmas Cactus is from two cuttings and is very big and old. Actually it's my Grandmothers plant she will be (95)next month. Part of it blooms at Christmas and the other half at Easter. I just love it. I have it in full sun South facing window and it does great. I do need to re-pot it and give it some cactus fertilizer.
Thanks for reminding me.

We in most parts of Canada are too far north for the cactus to go through it's "supposed" normal cycle. "With mine I even tried the put it in the dark at night and light during the day. It worked a bit better - it bloomed in November! It did change the bloom time permanently though so now it is mid November, February and once in a while mid May. By the way Easter cactus is a bit different - the leaves are shaped a bit different and they are a bit tougher. Never been to the Festial, but would imagine it would be great in ways. If you go - enjoy.

My mom has lots of Christmas Cactuses and they flower all year round. They're in front of a large window and get direct sunlight for part of the afternoon if I remember correctly.

They were announcing flurries here overnight a few times this week too, but they didn't happen. In Montreal we expect to hear that this time of year, we usually get our first flakes in mid to late October.

Hi Gill!! My Christmas cactus is also blooming--It's such a small cactus that sits on my porch every summer and loves the spot, then I have to bring it inside.

Gill, my mom always put hers in the basement for a month or two...it was not a finished basement...very little light. And she barely watered it. I cannot for the life of me remember what months she put it down there for. It always bloomed at Christmas.

They are really called "Holiday Cactus". They pick their own holidays! I have a couple different colors in the same pot--and they flower at different times. I have a "scrap cactus".
