So who said moving to the country was easy???

I seem to be taking one step forward and then two steps backwards with this move.

As per this post you have even seen the house, I have been in the house three times, but according to places I call to sort things out, the house doesn't exist???

The first time this happened I didn't think too much about it, as it was Bell Canada I was dealing with, and for anyone who deals with Bell Canada, you know what a bunch of dimwits they can be.

We had called our insurance company for a quote for the house insurance and they couldn't find this house???? We called another insurance company and they found the house no problem..okay....

So we go to the bank on Thursday and because it is a six digit number on the address, that proved to be a major problem, as the "field" on the computer only held 5 numbers?? Plus when she did get an address in the system, it didn't exist. I will say it had us both worried, as we wondered if they would give us a mortgage. We have been approved, so no problems there.

So what the problem is, we think, is that we must be on the border of two townships. So we are not sure which township we live in. Also as per the house survey we live on a concession, as per the house assessment we live on a rural route, and we have to have a 6 digit number as that is the way the fire trucks find your house. There is a true road name, it's just trying to figure out what our actual mailing address is as it can't be:

111111 Upnorth Road
Concession 7
RR# 7
Anytown, Ontario
P0P 0P0

We are going to pop into the post office closest to the house today to see if they can enlighten us. Just trying to remember the 6 digits is hard enough, never mind trying to remember the Concession number and the Rural Route #, plus a new postal code. No doubt it will sort itself out, and if worse comes to worse we will contact the people who live there and ask them what mailing address they use.

Ah the joys of house-buying! Good luck Gill. Still exciting though even with all the little niggles. Hope the rest of the time is plain sailing.

Hello Gill
Hope everything gets sorted out for you soon.

If you pop over to Stonehead's Blog (remember the two legged pig breeeder in Scotland) you'll discover this problem of rural addresses is not limited to one community

Take care

Good luck Gill. Bit of a pain the old owners didn't leave you some advice if things are this difficult though.

Bell Canada = Hell Canada

Switch to Rogers?

We had a similar problem with our new build house when we moved in nearly three years ago. The postcode we were allocated did not exist - it took some time before it appeared on the relevant authorites' computers. How stupid is that!

Sounds about right..and no said anything abut it being easy lol
I live in an townland but our postal addy is the nearest main town...some miles away, so when delivery drivers look for us they get snotty because we are not actually near that town even though it is our postal address...
There are three properties in our townland...there were lots more but the famine and low employment meant people left and never came back..so the townland is tiny...like most townlands in ROI.
So no one knows of it. We have no postcode and our directions can somtimes be turn left at the white horse in the field and right at the field of bullocks and a goat .

Now we just say we will meet them at the village church lol

Oh my gosh - that is a long address to remember! How exciting and fun it will be though....

As for age - I feel younger and younger every year....I'm certainly not feeling my age yet, and 30 and 35 didn't phase me in the least....maybe 40 will? Happy belated birthday!

Good old Bell Canada -- what a nightmare those people can be to deal with! Rogers not in the area of your new house?
I wonder if the insurance company/bank problems are caused by their computer programs -- not having enough room for a 6-digit.

We live at the intersection of 3 townships - stuff arrives here with four different addresses, the easiest being "General Delivery."

I would contact the people living there, might save some time and trouble. Hope everything gets all sorted out soon for you.

We live in the country, Gill. We have a street address, ex. 123 Wolf Rd., and also a Rural Route number. Usually our mail comes addressed with both on it. But you should never have a street name and number and a concession number. The confusion probably occured when they decided all rural addresses had to have an identification number instead of just the old rural route system so now it's a confusing hybrid of the two...good luck you'll figure it out eventually!

Happy Birthday Gill!

I would imagine the people living there have had to deal with this already. Why re-invent the wheel? Get the info from them and maybe save that energy for packing and cleaning!
