A rant.......

First the rant. So on Tuesday we went for our six month check up at the dentist. Have been going there for nearly 20 years, so they are used to me. I hate having x-rays they make me gag, anyhow she used a different holder thing and for once I didn't gag.

I love the girl that cleans my teeth, granted it takes twice as long for her to clean my teeth, but that's because we keep chit chatting. Anyhow after she is finished and the dentist comes in to have a look. Now the last couple of times I have had to have fillings replaced. He reckons they are old, and are worn and need replaced. I have said the last couple of times to dh, I swear he's just trying to make more money. So fast forward to Tuesday and he says, oh you may have a cavity........I say where? He prods the offending tooth and I say, I have never had a problem in that area. He says, oh, well maybe it's just the way the x-ray picture took. I say again I don't have toothache or a problem. I ask him how old the filling is and he says its 7 years old, so I ask how long do fillings last, he says they can go after six months and last up to 40 years.

He then says, well make sure you come back if you have a problem. So I say, listen have you ever known me miss an appointment??? I go regularly every six months. I honestly think he is trying to make money by replacing old fillings. I am not a happy camper, plus now I have toothache, and not where he said the iffy tooth was!!!

I know exactly how you feel. A similar thing happened to me with my dentist. I want to know how come if it so expensive, they can't afford to make their offices look a bit nicer.

We all need a good rant now and then! Yours sounds quite justified...

Hello Gill
I had to smile as I read this post 'cose our Dentist does the same thing - yours certainly is in a money making mood and I say that to Dh as well 'cose he believes everything they say.
There is a thought these days that fillings need replacing because the material used in previous years has deteriorated - well thats their thought, believe it if you want lol
Take care
Cathy

don't know enough about the subject to comment on whether dentists are trying to rip us off or not...., but you know what, they take a big risk of upsetting us when they have digits in our gobs right?

What is it with dentists?? I finally found a decent one but have had a few who seemed to look at my teeth and see dollar signs -- for no good reason other than I have dental insurance. I had to have a root canal a few years ago and almost fainted at the cost. This after listening to the dental specialist spend the half hour he was doing the root canal talking to his assistant about the vintage BMW he had bought for his son and his other expensive sports cars. Left a very sour taste in my mouth that wasn't from the anaesthetic!

I have insurance now but before they wouldn't even make payment arrangemnets. they would tally up a possible big bill and then say "too bad so sad" when didn't have the money. I think those fillings should be replaced for free if they don't last.

YOu've been busy. I think doctors and dentists are on the same wavelength. Amazingly enough, when I took our daughter to an orthodontist - HE wanted to wait a couple more years before gouging us for money for braces. Made my day....

If you are that uncomfortable, why not get a second opinion. That could ease your fears about the present dentist or prove your suspicions. He's probably no different than anyone else. Starving for income and trying to get it where he can.

I know, the first dentist I went to he wanted a fortune. He went on holiday to a very exotic climate afterwards. I figured we had all paid for his holiday.
