Buddy's Friday..........What a waste...........

I bought the February issue of the Prima Magazine and on the back page there is a full page ad that says:

"A THIRD OF THE FOOD WE BUY IN THE UK ENDS UP BEING THROWN AWAY"

That is just crazy, when you think of all the starving people in the world. I am quite sure this not only happens in the UK but a lot of the countries around the world. That line certainly caught my attention and basically it directed you to visit http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/ to learn how to reduce your food waste.

The basic concepts are simple. Only buy what you are going to use. Check expiry dates when buying things, so you can make sure you have enough time to use the product. Freeze leftovers or take them for lunch the next day. Plan your menu before you go shopping, so that way you only buy what you need. It's not really rocket science, all it requires from you is to be organized and plan ahead of the game.

Well, I agree, but the "all it requires from you is to be organized" is the part that hangs me up. LOL Seriously, I can't stand to waste food, either. I think how long DH had to work to earn what I wasted, and it makes me sick. I try real hard to make the most of the groceries.

Learning to make soup cut down on our food waste and food bill.

Food waste is terrible, but I do think supermarkets are to blame as well, putting on short expiry dates etc for one.

I know one I worked at would through bread away if out of date, wouldn't give it to soup kitchens etc, just throw it out!! shocking. When their freezers broke down all the food went into the bins!!

I spoke about this on my blog as well. It's so wasteful to see food being thrown out. I also think about restaurants that throw out so much food too. It would make me happier if the sizes were smaller so that none was wasted. Like Decadent Housewife said, learning to make sop helps cut down on the food waste.

I pay a little more to shop for only what I need, but I think that in the long run, I save money. I may buy canned foods at discount, but go to a local market for what's fresh and needed for just a single meal. If there are leftovers, we consume them.

when I was in hospital in 2007 we used to watch enormous amounts of wasted food tipped every day, and I mean massive amounts. It was dreadful

I saw a report like this before Christmas and it got me thinking. I think the loss of local shops is partly to blame and women who are working full time. The result is people do a huge weekly/fortnightly shop at a supermarket and some food goes off. People also buy a lot of convenience food and the expiry dates are often short.

We have no local shops other than a tiny mini market where the prices are horrendous and the food isn't fresh.

I hear ya, my problem is that if I plan means ahead, I usually don't want what I am supposed to make on that night. lol Never satisfied. I think it is all in my head.
