Am I the only one who didn't like this.......

Dh bought me the Mama Mia dvd for Christmas. I have heard nothing but good things about the movie. So we sit down on New Years Day to watch it. Now I have to say I didn't know anything about it, other than it includes Abba's music, and is about a girl getting married in the Greek Isles and she has a possible three choices of who her father could be, that she has invited to the wedding.

I started watching the dvd and it was weird, they just kept bursting out in song??? I just don't know, it wasn't unpleasant, just unusual. It was an easy enough movie to watch, it didn't need a lot of thought. I do have one question though....who told Pierce Brosnan that he can sing? He was painful to watch singing.

I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. Will say thought I did enjoy the last scenes where they sing songs in "ABBA type" costumes.

So now it's your turn to yell at me and tell me how much you enjoyed this movie and I have no taste.....LOL

don't forget your quarter today for your pot!!

I loved both the live musical and the movie :)

Much nicer to sit on my couch though then in the super uncomfy seats at The Princess of Wales theater.

No lots of people didn't like it. Nobody told Brosnan he could sing but you certainly have to admire him for getting up and taking the part. I for one loved it. I saw it at the cinema and lots of people were up dancing away in the aisle! By the way I thoroughly enjoy your blog.

I enjoyed the amateur exuberance of the film, including the non-singer singers! But I enjoyed the stage show more, even without the glorious scenery.

Stepping way out on a limb here (and checking that my masculinity is firmly in place) let me say that my wife dragged me to this movie and I actually enjoyed it. The difference was, I think, you watched it on a DVD. In the theatre it was a more shared event and we got to laugh along with the rest of the audience when Pierce tried to sing. It was just a bit of fun, if you don't mind people breaking into song at the drop of a hat. (Imagine if we did that in real life.)

We can't all like the same things Gill. In the past I have disliked films that others have raved about. Sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as I did, but I saw it at the cinema (twice) and feel that watching it at home wouldn't be quite the same. Agree with you that Pierce Brosnan can't sing but does he really need to!

Will be taking part in the daily savings too - thanks for the reminder.

If you get the chance to see "Mamma Mia" the stage version - it is marvellous. We saw it in London about 18 months ago - the audience participated all the way through - except for Husband who will only tolerate classical music!
At the end they ran through all the songs again with us audience standing, singing and clapping! The atmosphere in the theatre was terific.

No..I am with you.I didn tdislike it, just thought it didnt need the singing so much. However, will defend P.B...he wole point was that she was the singer in her youth and he was just trying to use her songs to get back with her..not because he was a singer.
I though Colin Firth was very good..wasnt sure he could pull off being gay, but he seemed to find it quite funny and went along with it very well. Not up there with the greats, but an easy to watch film. I watched itthe other night with some cocoa..prefer Love Actually and of course Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth)

I liked it but musicals aren't for everyone. I thought the way they worked the rest of a scene into the song was clever. I think the roles for the aging women in this movie were rather daring. Truly, some of the singers weren't that great, but I was even charmed by that.

I haven't seen it yet and I'm not so sure I would want to.
I think I'll just keep my present opinion of Pierce Brosnan as it is. Wouldn't want one movie spoiling that.

I believe Pierce did an interview and he clearly says, 'don't go watch the movie for my singing because I suck'....I'm surprised you didn't like it.....

Sam & I watched it last night and every time they belted a song we were up singing and dancing to it....

I haven't seen the movie, but have heard only good things about it. It's nice to know there are other opinions out there.

Gill, I haven't seen this one yet--but I've heard nothing but great things about it. BUT--one has to love musicals in order to enjoy this one. I love the OLD musicals (Showboat, Carousel, Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Oliver, etc.)--and am not sure any of the new ones come close to being THAT good.

Hugs,
Betsy

I haven't seen it yet. My friend got it for Christmas and has invited me round to see it over wine soon. I will let you know.I love musicals (usually) but haven't been particularly drawn to see it...will get back to you.

Well it's definitely supposed to be a theatre musical done on the Broadway format so when it was made into a movie, it took on a different feel all together didn't it. ha ha The only one who could sing is the girl! Everyone else is terribly mis-cast in the roles. I thought it was just okay too. I ended up laughing through most of the movie because of all off key singing! ha ha

My best friend just called me last night about this movie because she rented it and said the same exact thing as you! ha ha

Seeing as how I missed your posts lately I will sum it up by saying I liked them all!! I have not seen the movie yet but wanted too. I too have a hard time watching a musical that is all singing. Gets tiring after while.

I saw it on th big screen & enjoyed it - maybe it was the atmosphere & big screen.

I laughed plenty through it. A friend invited me to re watch it a few weeks later - now that I turned down. But if I get another chance to watch Australia - I would go! - LOVED that movie & saw it on big screen.

I enjoyed the movie Evelyn & Brosnan sang in that one too.

Hey.. I did enjoy it, maybe cause all of the ABBA music. I guess when I bought the ABBA Vinyl record back when I was like 10 I didn't understand it was a musical. Anywhoo... we watched it and G was gruntin' groanin' and rolling his eyes the whole time. I thought the same about Pierce, I had to swallow hard for that too...

I've never seen it, thought I would like to after viewing the commercials, but then I remembered, a lot of times they show the best parts in the commercials and the movie will really stink. Happy New Year

My copy is still on the TV cabinet. Waiting until there's nothing I want to watch on telly.

I don't expect to enjoy it as much as I would at the pictures but nobody would go with me! Saddoe that I am.

I have absolutely no desire at all to watch this movie. I don't like musicals for one...for another...well, it just looked stupid in the previews.

I thought Pierce Brosnan sang very well in Evelyn. I was impressed. Oh, if you haven't seen that movie, do! It's excellent!

I saw there's going to be a Bawbwa Wawa special with your guy...what's his name....fell down the ugly tree got hit by every branch...*grin*nudge*wink* just kidding! LOL ... Patrick Swayze ... him! :D It'll be on January 7th...whatever channel her specials are on. Just thought I'd let you know. (Hope you don't mind the teasing. It's only good-natured. Hard to tell that across a computer screen.)

Though I suppose it would only be fair to tell you I have a thing for Billy Idol. There you go. Let me have it! *duck* LOL

Hated it. Watched it on the plane going over to the States. My Mom saw the stage version and thought it was fabulous. Since she ranted and raved about it I thought it had to have "something." Nope. I kept waiting and hoping there would be a climatic scene that would make it all worth it. I was wrong. 98 minutes of my life that I can never get back. Wasted. Meryl Streep is a complete non-entity in my book. The ONLY thing she has ever acted in that she was any good in was The Devil Wears Prada. The only way this movie could have been any worse would have been in Gwyneth Paltrow played the girl getting married. In which case I never, ever would have watched it.
