Over on Carla's blog on her sidebar there is information about giving World Vision gifts as Christmas presents. I thought that was the neatest thing, as I do have a couple of friends I buy for that honestly they don't really need anything and I always feel unsure if they will use what I normally get. However giving them a gift card and letting them choose what they want to "buy" for someone else in the world makes perfect sense to my mind.
Is this something you do at Christmas or birthday's? Also do you know of other organizations that do this?
On Monday I pottered around the house, it was a gorgeous day and I was able to get the laundry dried outside and not light the fire until after lunch. Mind you it cooled off a lot when the sun went down. For the time of year we are having super weather.

I have done this before, but the kids didnt really appreciate it. I may do it again in the future but since I have two sponsor children I dont feel so bad not doing it more often
At the company I work for some years we do that as a Kris Kringle - it is a nice idea.

a nice idea gill
glad you are having a lovely day... dull and wet here!
It was near 80 yesterday and I switched on the A/C for about an hour...I hate this kind of weather...tornado weather!!!
I like the Global gift idea, too...what we do in my mother's name (she did this for years)is get all the fixings together for a Thanksgiving dinner and deliver them to a family who is having a struggle to get anything on the table, and the same family is followed right through the new year. They don't look on it as charity, it's Christian comfort...my mom's name was Grace...she exhibited it in every way.
I too think it's a wonderful way to give. That's what Christmas is truly all about. Hugs
I'm not sure I have ever heard of that type of gift card before, but it sounds like a lovely idea!
I'm actually looking forward to cooler weather and snow, I can't stand the time of year between when the trees are free of their leaves and the snow sticks, it seems so drab and dull to me.
My friends gave me a goat, well they gave the money to provide someone else with a goat who could get a lot more use out of one that I could! For me it was a great gift but I had told them that I would like that sort of gift and they were still a little unsure until they received my heartfelt thanks. Not sure that all my gift recipients would be happy with such a 'gift' from me but I would be happy if it were the other way around!

We often give World Vision gifts in my family. We sometimes wrap up a picture of the gift so there is something to open, or I have bought a similar small gift for the recipient to open. (One year I gave mosquito netting in my brother's name and I also bought him a mosquito net hat, as he was going tree planting up north that summer.)
Obviously I think it's a fabulous idea! :) Especially for people who have "everything". Personally, I would love a "charity" gift anytime over a material gift.
We have not seen the sun in two or three days...supposed to appear tomorrow. Thank God!
I've heard of these. It seems a very nice idea. I also like the Angel Trees that you see at various stores, the kind that has the first name of a child with their age written on a paper ornament. You take the ornament and buy a gift and leave it in a large bin near the cash register. Toys for Tots are one I donate a toy. I also buy food for the food bin at my local grocery store.
