Very realistic and violent video games.......

I don't play many video games and the ones I have played usually are so child like that no one is offended.  Plus I do tend to be useless at them anyway.  I could never get Mario to jump over stuff, no matter how high I held the controller thing; and if my driving was anything to go by on Mario Cart, I shouldn't be allowed on the roads AT ALL!!  I also remember a monkey and some banana's on another game.

I have been introduced recently to a totally different kind of video game; I am assuming they call them video games?  On Swagbucks you can get one Swagbuck by watching the trailer to a video game.  Today's was World Of Tanks, and I actually watched it while it was playing.  It obviously involved tanks shooting at one another.  What struck me other than all the blowing up of tanks was the little details, like the insignia's on the vaious tanks.  They were going through a field of poppies; why poppies?

Some of the other's have been way more violent and pretty sexist if you ask me.  Some with women in them have figures to die for (and they do) and are wearing very little clothing.  The killing and violence is awful.  If people are playing this day in day out what must it be doing to their minds?

I on occasion have played Candy Crush and while there is no violence in there it can be addictive if you play more than a couple of game at a time.

Personally I don't get it? Maybe I am missing something?  Please feel free to give your opinions......

Back in the 1980s I studied the effects that violent games had on children/adults. Not good.

As a teacher, I have seen first hand the effect these games have on children. Shocking. I try to stay away from anything with violence in it personally.

As an adult I am miserable at them. I have a Wii for the exercise program (which I don't use anymore, shame on me) and for Animal Crossing which has no violence in it at all - you set up a town. It is great fun planting flowers until you have to water those flowers every day. I am not a fan of video games for anybody and I do play Candy Crush on FB once in a while but not on a regular basis and, for the record, I am pretty bad at it. If I had children at home, they wouldn't be encouraged at all but then, I censored the movies mine watched too so I am an old fogey.

I'm with you Gill, I couldn't even get that hungry pac man thing to eat the dots. All that violence has to have a bad effect on young minds. I don't understand why parents buy it :(

Violence for the sake of story is one thing, which you can see played out in film or television-it's part of a greater narrative, and generally has a point. But video game violence seems to be violence merely for the sake of violence.

I don't play video games myself... aside from the occasional bout of tetris.

I don't play any games at all but i have two teen boys that do. Yes the violence is shocking but this is the world these kids are dealing with. It is one thing to sit back and judge the games they are playing but I am convinced that to my boys and their friends they see it for what it is, just a game, an intense one but not their real world. look at some of the comic books our generation read? no different. Mine tend to like pokemon which teaches them to build and collect. yes we have to be careful but I think there is less to worry about then what we are told.

Personally, I think there is a whole series of "wrong" in video games.

Starting at the bottom, there is an individualist sentiment that is a general problem in our society to begin with. Add aiding and promoting MORE sedentary activity, and we are starting to already move into my hot zone. Our young people do not need one more reason to park on the couch (and the Wii is NOT exercise enough!).

That said though, there are ratings on games for a REASON. Considering the majority of people (around me at least) completely ignore those ratings for movies, they aren't going to consider their value on a game either. While I do think there is an age where there is the ability to discern between fantasy and reality, I don't think it is at 14 playing GTA and the ones worse than that. They are gratuitous violence at best, and they glorify all kinds of things that I work hard at keeping out of our lives, if not at least on the fringes of awareness...we certainly don't need to be acting it out.

I see a distinct difference in morals and behavior in general between people (of all ages actually) who play certain games and those who don't. I am sure there is an effect, and it isn't one I care to indulge in or promote.

(we also don't have tv programming, we don't do facebook or other social media, etc. I am sure all of that also influences my choices and decisions)

I admit the only games I play are with my little cousins or nephews and Mickey mouse and mario are pretty tame. But some of the games scare me. As for me I am hooked on the free version of words with friends
