Another one bites the dust...............

Got a call from the pound and I decided to not adopt the bulldog we saw.  The woman from the pound was very negative about him, and after listening to her for a while I stopped her talking and said "you are being very negative?"  She explained that she didn't want anyone to be under any illusion what they would be taking on.

This bulldog had allergies (like we don't know anything about allergies in a dog!), and had just had an eye operation, so would need lotion put on his eye twice a day for the rest of his life.  Then she thought he would need an operation on his knees and hips, despite the fact the vet had found NO problems with them.  On and on it went.  She figured he would need $250 spent on him per month.

She also said there were 17 other people wanting to adopt this dog, so I said fine let one of them adopt him.  I feel so sorry for this poor bulldog if he only has this very negative woman advocating for him.  So dh has said we should just forget about looking for another dog for a while, and I agree.

Pleased with myself as I managed to take down the snow fences one handed on Tuesday.  Dh just has to take down the posts and put the snow fences away, they were too heavy for me.  So I have decided there will be no more snow this season!!!!!

$250 is a huge financial commitment per month for who knows how long. Why did she think he would need surgery on his joints when the vet didn't? Is this breed prone to joint problems? If she is so negative with every one of the 17 people he may end up without a home.

Lotion twice a day for the rest of life....It was hard to put eye lotion into my dog even a few days! I understand your decision.

Poor bulldog! Let's hope he finds a good home with someone.
I hope you eventually find a suitable dog soon.

Perhaps I should trade my cats for the dog...it'll be much cheaper!

She does sound very negative. I can understand her wanting to let people know that they would be adopting a special needs dog, but i also wonder about the comment she amde regarding joints. Even if she said something like, "this breed often has knee and hip problems, although the vet did not find any on the last examination," it would serve as a possible concern in the future.

Who knows? maybe she wants to take the dog herself. I do hope the dog can find a loving home.

Well done on the snow fences, you! Nearly all of our snow is gone, but i'm not going to do more than dig in my gardens for at least another month before i start planting anything. I got burned last year on that score.

Poor bully! It's fine to let people know what they're in for, but to start off by telling everyone what all his problems are certainly isn't the way to go. I hope he finds a good home despite this woman's (seeming) attempts to the contrary...The right dog will come along. They always do.

I feel sorry for the dog, but if what she said was true, I would not want that headache.

I bet you will be so happy to have the cast off! You will feel like a new woman.

She does sound negative, however maybe that's a good thing. Sure wouldn't want him to be placed a number of times. I've seen that happen with cats at our local shelter and it's pretty upsetting for both animal and those wanting to adopt it. I think you made a wise decision.

btw - finished 2 books, reviews coming. Hugs

Maybe she has a friend who wants that dog, maybe that's why she was so incredibly negative. Hope one of those 17 takes it.

I agree with you Gill - poor dog. I can understand the lady wanting to make sure, but surely a more positive approach is called for here?

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. At least the lady was honest about the dog. I have a friend who works for animal control and she can read a dog faster than anything I have ever seen and she is usually right so I am sure the lady was just trying to help you out (and save you a boatload of money!). Im sure the right dog will come along soon.

The woman from the adoption agency was actually doing just the right thing. My mom has fostered many dogs and she always preferred to tell the blunt truth about the dogs she had up for adoption to people who applied to give them homes to avoid having dogs come back the the new owners be disappointed when a dog's faults came up. Don't feel bad for the dog, he will find the perfect owner eventually and it would be best for him to stay with his foster for months than to end up being shifted from pillar to post and I am sure that you will eventually find the perfect dog for you as well :o)

I wonder if this is how she advocates for all the dogs needing homes? I haven't had a cat or dog yet that at some point didn't cost real money. That's part of the deal...however I think you made the best possible choice under the circumstances.
