Updates and a question..........plus the daily savings club..

House we are purchasing:

He's accepted our offer.........YEAH!!! It's conditional on us selling our house. I will tell you more about the house, when we have sold our house. I just don't want to jinx it by saying too much. I am all excited and am looking forward to us moving there, if all goes well.

Our house:

Well that is back on the market. We have had to take a big price drop, but we so want the other house, it will be worth it. It's on the front page of our local real estate paper this week, so fingers crossed we get some people viewing it.

Washer:

We have gone out and bought another washer, just a cheap top loader, cost us $348 + taxes, pretty annoying having to do that, but what can you do?

Now for my question. Does anyone out there have a septic tank? I thought I read somewhere that you should put a block of yeast down the toilet once a month, to keep things going okay? Are there any other things I should know about a septic, to keep it in tip-top condition. This one was pumped in 2007, so it won't need to be pumped for another year or so.

Also are there any do's and don'ts regarding a well, as this property is on well water?

Finally are you keeping up with the daily savings club, if you are following the formula, you should have $6 in your pot today, 12 x 50 cents.

We lived in a house with a septic tank for 30 years. Never heard of the yeast thing. We never never ever put anything other than loo paper down the toilets. We had a set of rods and occasionally we used them (Dad loved doing it!!). We tried to use very little detergent as that prevents the bacteria in the tank doing its job. Our tank was brick built and will now be about 90 years old. During our 30 year tenure we had no problems and never had to have it emptied. The outflow was clear and drained underground down a slope of about 200 yards into a field. Keeping my fingers crossed with your house sale.

Congratulations on having your offer for the house accepted. Hope you manage to sell your house.

We have a septic tank but it sounds as if it is different to the one at your proposed purchase. Our tank has three chambers and a punp which runs twice a day to pump the water throught the tanks then the clean water drains into the water course. We don't need to have it emptied but the neighbours who have different tanks do have to have theirs emptied. We have a set of drain rods which my husband enjoys using but it has not been necessary to use them for sometime now. We have never been advised to use yeast.

Congratulations on the acceptance!
I hope your house sells soon.
Don't use the expensive TP to flush down the toilet. It fills up the septic. We have lived here 15 years and not had to have the septic tank cleaned yet. My in-laws have had theirs 14 years and had to have it cleaned last year. But they used the fluffy TP. I've not heard of the yeast thing either. But you can buy stuff at the store to send into the tank.
I have done that a few times, but not on a regular basis.

Hi ...I read your diary every morning and am a fellow brit living in Ontario . I love your diary ...lol .We have TONS in common .
Congrats on the house ..we just did something very similar ..moved from the city (Toronto ) out to the Kawarthas ..and love our 3 acres and beautiful home ...anyway we too have a well and septic ..its easy ..you just are careful what you put down it ..but never heard of yeast ..hmm . I wouldnt do that . We are here 2 years and expect at least another 10 before any thing needs to be cleaned out . Make sure you know exactly where and how the septic tank lays on the property ..it should be on the plans . there are various types too so you should enqire all your details . our bills are waaaay cheaper here ..every thing is cheaper in fact even food surprisingly enough .

Going back into lurkdom now ...xxxxxx Linda xxx

Continued prayers my friend. I can't wait to hear you sold your present home.

I would google septic tank care if I were you. I believe they make special conditioners for septic tanks - perhaps the yeast was used before these conditioners were on the market?

We just moved into this house 5 years ago, and it's our first experience with a septic tank. I use the tablets from Quixtar--just flush one down the commode every Friday--and haven't had any problems. Our plumber said ordinarily, you don't have to have a septic tank pumped out. It's just a myth perpetrated by the companies who do that sort of thing.

I'm careful not to put harsh detergents down the sink or commode, and our house doesn't have a garbage disposal, because of the septic tank, and we haven't had to have ours pumped out in the 5 years we've lived here. Before we met our plumber, I asked the previous owner when the tank was last pumped out and they didn't know. So, if it was done, it's been at least 7 years ago.

Hope your house sells quickly! I know how nerve-wracking it can be to buy a house on contingency, and then wait for someone to buy your own. AND then try to coordinate the closing dates and move-ins, only we did it with a cross-country move! I grew a lot of gray hairs on that one!

We've had a septic for 10 years, for a while I dropped a "Septo Tab" in a toilet once a week and flushed, but haven't for years and it works fine. We emptied it once in 10 years, not because of any problems, but because we thought we should. Things break down and go through the weeping tiles when all is working well.
If you want more specific info send me questions and I'll ask hubs.
Hope you sell quick!
Blessings
Niki

great news Gill!

we use a product called septo bac, it is yeasty in nature, not sure if it does any good or not. We have never had ours pumped in the last 16 years and it works fine.
