Made out like a bandit..........

I have discovered a new to me fabric store.  It's called Hummingbird Sewing in Barrie, Ontario.  To save me travelling to drop off my quilt, when I wanted it sewn, Rose uses this store as a drop off and pick up point.  I signed up for their newsletter and emails, and got an email to let me know that on Wednesday they had a couple of special deals.  The zippers were buy one get one free and ten packages of buttons for $10.  There wasn't a great selection of zippers, but did pick up four for the price of two for my stash and get ten packages of buttons, as they are always handy to have on hand.

This is what I go for $10:

I was so pleased with what I chose, as they will be good for both knitting and sewing.  Not sure if you can see the prices, but the package with three buttons on them is normally $7 each package.  They are so pretty.  Not sure what I'll do with the spiders, probably something Halloween themed!

I had to go to Barrie for a couple of other things, so it was worthwhile me stopping by to pick these up.

Happy Thanksgiving to my friends south of the border, hope you have a lovely day!

Had a quiet but busy weekend.

It was Thanksgiving here in Canada this past weekend.  Not that we generally do much for Thanksgiving and this one was no different as the kids rented a "cottage" for the weekend and they all went there.  No, we were not invited, but as neither dh or I are 100% well, we were not overly bothered.

One thing I did do this weekend was catch up with some sewing.  I finally got Paige's quilt top finished, the one that uses all the fabrics from her first year photos.

It is hard to see and the light was shining behind the quilt, so you see the seams.  I have a call into a lady to see about her doing the quilting for me.  It's around a double bed size of 60 inches wide and 77 inches long.  Paige is climbing out of her crib now, so she will be moving into a big bed soon.  She will be 16 months old on the 15th of this month.  The fabric for her birthday shot will be the binding on the outside of the quilt.
I am not a huge fan of Halloween and I do know the mother's of the grands are not that fussy about the children getting a lot of chocolate.  So I decided to make a dog called George all dressed up for Halloween.  These two are for Jeina and Paige.  The material is what I had laying around the house.

Three more to go and then to pick up a Halloween book for each of them!  Not a speck of chocolate in sight from us!

Happy Thanksgiving to our fellow Canadians..........

No turkey for us just a roast of beef in the crockpot, as I am re-painting the family room walls; I don't like the original colour!!

Both still sick with this cold, but better than we were.

Have a good one!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians out there.....

It's Thanksgiving Day today in Canada.  We had a full turkey dinner yesterday as I know we are going to be busy with yard work today.

Dh suggested that we go out for a Thanksgiving meal, but that would have probably cost us $100.  Turkey's were on sale at No Frills for 95 cents per pound and they had small turkey's for a change so I picked up a 9 pounder.  Mind you they were utility turkeys so there may be a part missing!!!  In my case it was a leg; it cooked up lovely.

We had turkey, stuffing (recipe here), bacon rolls, mashed potatoes, carrot and turnip (or rutabaga) and gravy.  I didn't make bread sauce and I forgot the cranberry jelly in the fridge!!
It was really good, but honestly it takes a heck of a longer to tidy up than eat the meal!!  With the leftovers I put together two casseroles for the freezer.  I am freezing the one whole turkey breast.  There is a plate of sliced turkey, stuffing and bacon rolls for sandwiches and tonight's supper along with a bowl of potatoes.

For dessert we had apple crisp and ice cream and that too was really good.

I even used the dishwasher to wash up the dishes for me.  It was a cool day on Sunday, although we don't have the heating on we did have the fire on from first thing in the morning.  It is definitely getting cooler around here.

Hope you have a lovely week; I have something on every day this week......no rest for the wicked as they say!!

Thanksgiving Dinner.........

A traditional Thanksgiving dinner is Turkey with all the trimmings and pumpkin pie for dessert.  However due to being crazy busy and the temperature being so warm that our a/c came on (I had forgotten to turn it off for the season) cooking a turkey and all the trimmings didn't seem like my idea of fun.  So this is what we had instead:

Yep, BBQ which consisted of burgers, roasted potatoes, Cesar salad, coleslaw and bean salad.  Dessert was homemade peach pie with ice cream.  A traditional Thanksgiving meal, no but it was tasty.  However I forgot to buy more Ketchup, so that is why it is upside down so everyone could squeeze the last bit out of the bottle, and you know where the kids were sitting by the can's of coke!!!

How ever we were thankful, as at least we could afford to have a nice dinner shared with our family.  A lot of people in the world wouldn't be able to do that.

Enjoy your Sunday.

By the way I am having problems again posting comments on some blogs, Karine you're one of them and Cindy you're another...........it is getting past being annoying now.......my google account shows up I post my comment and then nothing, try again, nothing, try using anonymous and nothing.......no idea what to do?

Happy Thanksgiving and a recipe........

A Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there.  It's Thanksgiving weekend this weekend.  We "celebrated" on Saturday as the kids came over.  We didn't have a turkey, I made chicken breasts, stuffed with cream cheese and spinach and wrapped in bacon.  Roasted potatoes (from the garden) and Caesar salad.  For dessert dd bought an ice-cream cake from Dairy Queen and I made Chewy Ginger Cookies (recipe below)

The following recipe is from a Better Homes and Gardens, "Christmas At Home By The Fireside."

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups flour (plain)
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup margarine, butter or shortening
1 cup sugar (granulated/white)
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses (in Britain use treacle)
2 tbsp sugar (granulated/white)

Combine flour, ginger, soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt.  Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl beat margarine, butter or shortening with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds to soften.  Gradually add the 1 cup of sugar and beat until fluffy.  Add egg and molasses; beat well.  Beat or stir in flour mixture.

Shape into 1 1/2 inch balls, then roll in the 2 tbsp sugar and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake in a 350 oF oven for 10 minutes or until edges are set and cookies are still puffed.  Let stand for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Makes 24 cookies.

*****  What I do or don't do.

I didn't add ground cloves as I didn't have any.  I didn't roll in the 2 tbsp of sugar; too much extra work for me!!!

I did chop up some crystallized ginger and added them; that's what the lumps are in the cookies.  I probably used around half a dozen pieces, and I buy it from the bulk food store.

Simple recipe that everyone loves.

The weather has just been glorious this weekend, and we still don't have the heating on, so I am setting a new goal of not having the heating on for another week.

The project for this weekend is putting a new garage door on the garage.  I should hopefully have photos tomorrow.

Look who came to see us and a close encounter, sort of with a skunk.

You'll have to click on the photo to enlarge it. They were eating the crab apples to the left of the photo at around 4:30pm on Friday afternoon. Sorry for the quality of the photo, but it was pouring down and I took it through the family room window.

Friday was a quiet day. My dad came up and did some jobs for us. He's such a good help, as dh just doesn't have the time to get everything done. So my dad who is very handy, does all the jobs dh doesn't get too.

It poured down all day also on Friday, so I had to dry some of my laundry in the dryer, as there was too much for the clothes horse. So other than walking the dog, never left the house all day. It was a true Fall day wet and windy, and just plain miserable. We had the fire on by lunchtime just to take the chill off. With having the fire on, we haven't had to have the heating on yet. We are forecast for some wet snow this coming Thursday, so my guess it will come on this next week!!

Oh and on Friday night me and Molly had a close encounter with a skunk, luckily not to close of an encounter, but quite close enough for me. I decided to walk the dog when it was dark, and headed into the field, and I happened to see something in the middle of the field. Luckily it moved and I saw the white stripe........so I headed away from it, knowing it was a skunk. Then all of a sudden Molly saw it and all hell broke loose. It took all my weight to hold her back and she is only 40 lbs. Then the howling started, and the baying. I couldn't believe the racket coming out of that dogs mouth.

The outcome of all this, is I am sitting here on Friday night typing this with a bag of frozen peas on my knee, as she both pulled my back and my knee...........here we go again!

It's Thanksgiving in Canada this weekend, so just in case I forget, a Happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians out there..............

Happy Thanksgiving and the weather.....

Well it's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, and I must say I have a lot of things to be thankful for.

I have a loving family, who in the scheme of things are pretty healthy.

We have a lovely home and enough food on our table.

I have a very supportive husband who provides for me and lets me stay at home to look after the house.

I have friends who care about me and I care about them.

All in all I have a lot to be thankful for. So a Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there.

This poem was on The Simple Things blog and I thought it was very appropriate:

Thank God for dirty dishes
They have a tale to tell
While other folks go hungry
We are eating very well
With home, health & happiness
We shouldn’t want to fuss
For by this stack of evidence
God’s very good to us.

Now to the weather. We are having some gorgeous Fall weather here. As yet we haven't turned on our heating. Now that's not to say we haven't had some cool nights and mornings. We had frost earlier on in the week, but once the sun comes out it warms the house up nicely.

However I know this weather will not last, and I know one day it will be lovely, then the next the temperature will drop like a stone and that will be it until next May. I must admit one thing I miss about Britain is the seasons. They have more definitive seasons over there. Here its either hot or freezing cold. Spring is over in a flash. Fall is a lot better, at least we have a couple of months of fall here, its my favourite time of year in Canada.

I love the crisp mornings, there's a freshness in the air. I love the changing leaves on the trees, the colours are stunning. Fall also means apple pies, pumpkins and bowls of soup. I took a couple of photos of some trees a short walk away from where we live. I hope you enjoy the colours like I do. As before you know it those trees will have dropped their leaves and will be covered in snow. That reminds me, we must look for a snow blower, we're getting too old to shovel snow!!

This tree is more vibrant in person.

Here is another tree just around the corner from that other one.

Peaches........

Over the weekend a dear friend dropped off some Ontario Peaches for me.  She got them from the Niagara region.  She goes down there from Bra...
