A first for dh on Tuesday..........

He got his first ever seniors discount on Tuesday!  TSC had a Senior's Day where people aged 55 and above got 20% off their regular priced purchase.  So off we went to get some bags of Water Softener Salt.
Now a couple of funny or not so funny things happened with this purchase, depending on the way you look at it.

Dh was a bit ticked that they didn't ask him for id!!

I was a bit ticked as she assumed we were splitting the purchase (due to special discounts when you buy more than 3 bags)..........hello I am not 55 yet!!!

We had both had our hair cut earlier in the day (with coupons of course) and so our white/grey hair was showing up well.

By the way we ended up saving around $3 a bag with the discount, which is nothing to sneeze at.

We must investigate what age you are at to get a senior discount, as we always thought it was 60 years of age and older.

Good job on the savings. My Hubby turned 60 two weeks ago and he's thrilled that he now gets discounts almost everywhere. As I'm 55 I still have to wait for most places. Happy shopping!
Blessings,

Senior's discounts vary - anywhere from 55-65 - so it's not as straightforward as one would imagine, unfortunately. But take advantage when & where you can! :) xx

Many places will give you a senior discount at 55, you just have to ask. For example, Wendy's will offer a free small soda or coffee with your meal, but you have to ask. It's their little unknown secret. Also, some businesses offer a senior discount or a discount as a long time returning customer in good standing. Bess from Mass

So many places offer discounts to the 55+ group, Shoppers Drug Mart is one of them. Be sure to check the various stores on their websites.

here the sr. discounts vary with each store. Don't feel bad -- years ago Kroger had senior discount day on Wednesday. I already had a good deal of visible grey hair. I walked into the store, picked up what I needed and went to check out. The only checker was this incredibly annoying woman who resembled a horse and had hair to her waist dyed jet black. She asked if I wanted my discount. I inquired what discount. She went on to explain their senior discounts. I was insulted and asked her how old she thought I was. She said she just assumed by my hair that I was old enough. I informed her I was only 41 but thanked her very much and swore never to go into that store on Wednesday again. She said not to get angry but go dye my hair dark like hers. I left in a huff. I can see where she was confused though because a very few years after that she passed away and I read her obituary and she was almost 10 years younger than me and SHE looked 60. I know there is no easy way for clerks and such to ask age without just doing it but there are other ways to sort of guess a persons age besides hair color. I have seen your photo and I would never ask you if you wanted the sr. discount. If they are required by the job to ask then somebody should figure out a tactful way for them to do that.

When you hit 50 here, you get a package through from AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). Being a bit older than the Great Scot, mine came through a few years ago and he teased me unmercifully... his turn came this year.

Ahhhh, revenge.

I didn't realize TSC had a seniors discount. Chuck is eligible now too! A few more years for me. When I asked at our local Bulk Barn they said their senior discount is for 65 and up. I believe McDonalds is 55 and up. It would be good if business's would post their seniors discount age.

My husband would be eligible; he's over 55. I'm not there yet, but I can benefit from his status when he's with me! :)

I imagine it depends on the store or service as to the age.

I've never heard of that kind of salt.

Many places don't advertise their discount, you have to ask. M was asked the other day at a shop. He's approaching his 50th birthday and was somewhat taken aback. I did a big POSITIVE waaaaaaahoooooo! I hope I boosted his morale!

That is a big savings in my opinion. Around us, it varies on what age you have to be to get the senior discount. And some places you have to ask for it, because they are not allowed to ask. People have been offended when they were not seniors.

Funny but true...when hubby was in later 40's maybe, he was ask if he wanted his senior discount...LOL He told him not that age...if I had been him I would have said sure.

Different stores/services have different ages. I just found out recently that Michaels has a senior's discount for over 55 that you can use on top of other discounts/coupons.

There has to be some benefit to getting older. You can often get discounts in other countries too. About 8 years ago we were visiting the War Museum in Valletta & the woman took one look at us & just gave us the senior discount automatically. You just have to laugh. What naffs me off is not being able to use my bus pass in Scotland!
