Today's Flower

My friend gave me some Begonia bulbs back in March of 2008 for my birthday. I planted them in the garden last year and they didn't do much. This year I stuck the couple that were left in a pot and stuck them on the outside deck and they have flourished. I may leave them in the pot over winter and just bring them in the house before the first frost. Should I cut the flowers off them, when I bring them in?

Has anyone had success with doing this, and do you have any tips? Sorry about the quality of the photos, they are not too clear.

They're lovely photos Gill. I'm afraid I don't have a green thumb so can't offer any advice.

Lovely colour!
Unfortunately I can´t give you any tips. In Sweden this flower has to be brought in the house before frost arrive.

Hehehe, I do not have a green thumb, so I can't give you any tips. But I think it is a good idea to bring the pot indoors when it is cold outside.

These are a lovely color.
I haven't had begonias in a long time. For sure bring them in before frost. When you bring them in I think you can just treat them like a houseplant and remove dead leaves, blooms and stems when needed. At first keep them near a sunny window, gradually, reducing the sunlight. This will help them to adjust indoors. They will probably loose a lot of leaves but should get used to the change and you'll have an indoor plant all winter.

What a beautiful color on your begonia! I am sorry, I cannot help you with what to do, I have never had a begonia!

The photo in my header is of a withered water lily.

Love your new header - that is a great shot!

That is such a lovely colour for a begonia! From what I remember my grandmother doing, Carletta has the right of it. I would leave the flowers on till they fall off because of the light shock to the plant, so you will have the colour! Keep it from getting too leggy, and you can put it back out in the spring. Oh, and spray it or dunk the whole plant in soapy water, to prevent hitch-hikers!
