Month end..........

I had a very restless night on Tuesday night.  No idea why, but it made for a sluggish Wednesday.  Just couldn't get my butt moving.  However good jobs were jobbed, so all was not at a loss.

Spent a delightful half hour doing the banking and filling in the figures on the Excel worksheet for February's expenditures.  Water bill was up, gas bill was down and hydro bill was up a couple of dollars?  With the weather the way it has been this month, I knew the gas bill would be lower.  Our gas bill also incorporates the water heater rental as well.  We can't get out of it, as we took it on when we bought the house.  I was a little surprised at the water bill though, that doesn't make sense, other than it may have been for a slightly longer period of time, we get billed every other month.

I must say I am liking the fact that I log in this spreadsheet how much we spend, it's giving us an insight into where the money goes etc.

On Wednesday it was lovely and warm in the morning so I headed out for a walk before it rained.

We have 600 houses being built in the adjoining land to our subdivision.  As I hadn't been walking in a while I was interested to see how fast they are getting one.  This photo is taken at the other end of our street.  The barriers will be removed eventually and you will be able to drive/walk through.  There should be no more traffic past our house, as there are faster ways to exit the subdivision.

One house on that street is already up for sale, for around $1.2 million which is crazy.  It's brand new never been lived it, I am guessing someone bought it too flip?

Further up the street, these barriers will also be removed eventually and again it will be a through road.
Ran into Pugsy on my walk.  She is owned by twin teenage girls who love her to bits.
I took a close up of her vest as I was impressed you could get messages like these to put on them.  She has been attacked by larger dogs, and is very nervous now.  I am guessing the girls had given her a dye job as well....LOL

It was nice to get a quick walk in the other day to have a look around the neighbourhood.

Dealing with bills that spiral upwards, and upwards........

Got our Rogers bill in and it was over $60 more 😮than the prior month because the "promotional prices" they had applied to the account had all expired........

I HATE, HATE, HATE having to deal with this sort of thing.  Now "this sort of thing" involves our internet, home phone (yes we are old fashioned and still have a landline) and tv bill.  My cell phone bill is in place until the end of November of this year.

So I call Rogers and go through everything with the guy and after explaining I want the same service but back at the other price, he put me on hold, and never came back?????

Finally someone else in Halifax (east coast of Canada) picks up and we are back to square one.  No he cannot transfer me back to the guy in Toronto; he will deal with it {{{SIGH}}}  The only good thing about him picking up the call, is I do not have to go all over my info again as at least the first guy had put in my notes he had verified all my information.

After 46 minutes, yes I said 46 LONG, LONG MINUTES...........my bill will still be $30 per month more expensive.  That is the best they can do.  😠

So now what do I do?  I have no idea at this point.  We could reduce our tv channels I guess and go down to the basic?  Otherwise I don't want to touch the rest of our services, as we use them and need them.

I need to look into ways of reducing this bill as now we are paying just under $310 for the tv, internet, home phone and my cell phone.  We also pay for Netflix and I think that is $13.99 a month and we pay for an internet sports package which is $152 a year (saved a lot by paying for it yearly Dzan .  So all in all, we pay around $335 for everything per month.

It's one of those month's.........

Every time I turn around another bill pops up.  I had to pay a years bill on the water heater this week.  Long story behind this, from now on it will be around $30 a month for the water heater, which I think is expensive.  At the old house it was $165 a year.

Now the year's warranty is up on the furnace.  There are five years warranty on certain parts but its prudent to have it serviced yearly etc, so that will end up costing well over $300 a year I can see.

Oh well on wards and upwards as they say..........

On a brighter note it's our wedding anniversary.  We have been married 32 years.  Happy Anniversary dear and here's to another 32 years!!

We are having a dinner out on Friday with a gift card the kids gave us at Christmas.  So that's a good thing as they say!

It can only happen to us!!!! and a couple of questions

Now what you ask.........

well Molly continues to be a joy, BUT.........would you believe she has allergies!! I know what you're saying, she'll fit right in, in this house. She started chewing her paws when we brought her home on Saturday, Maxine our black lab did the same thing and was allergic to ragweed. Now ragweed allergies don't normally start until August 15th, so not sure what is going on with Molly.

So I take her to the vet on Tuesday for a meet and greet, and to get some allergy pills. He's not sure what is going on with her eating her paws, but gave me the pills. The problem with these pills though is that for four days she is on a high dosage, which makes her pee like a trooper. That brings me to another issue, Molly cannot go through the night without being let out for a pee and a poop!!!

I swear it's like having a baby in the house. Plus she tends to chew her paws through the night, and as she is sleeping in our bedroom, both me and dh are walking around bleary eyed...LOL Also as Molly sticks to us like glue, there will be no way she will sleep anywhere else.

So of course the vet says we need to check her for heartworm, and I should make sure she doesn't get fleas, so she should take Advantage for that. Here is a breakdown of the bill:

Office Visit - $55
60 Allergy Pills - $40.80
Heartworm test - $32
Advantage Medication - $94.72
GST (tax) $11.13

For a total of $233.65

I need to research this more for next year, as I am sure I can get the Heartworm/Flea control medication cheaper, and I used to give Maxine Benadryl for her allergies, but she was 100lbs in weight, and as Molly is less than 40lbs I don't know if I can give her Benadryl?

Also there is a cat wandering around outside. I have seen it on our property a couple of times now. It spends a lot of time wandering around the raspberry patch. What should I do to encourage it to hang about our place? I don't want to have a cat in the house, but don't mind having one outside. Also as it is freezing cold in winter here what happens to them in winter?

A Happy Valentine's Day and more on the house moving/sale and living in the country.

So a Happy Valentine's Day to you all. We don't really do anything special for Valentine's Day. Me and dh just exchange cards. Although I did make dh a cross stitch card this year which made a nice change. Personally I think Valentine's Day is over rated, and in my opinion I don't think it should be all about the one day, it should be about every day you spend together, as I said just my opinion.........

So the house. Well on Friday we had two showings booked, will say I have no idea if either turned up, one I know cancelled, but not sure about the other one, as they didn't leave a card. As I am typing this Friday night, we have a showing booked for between 11am and 12 noon on Saturday. So have to admit we have had more action and interest in the house, over these past couple of days, than we had for the whole time we had it up for sale last time.

Monday is a holiday for us in Ontario, so we have decided not to accept any offers until Monday night...........I know we're being overly optimistic that anyone will put an offer in, but we have to be positive.

I called our insurance company to get a quote on insuring the new house and almost fainted when they gave me the quote, $1, 445.00, which is nearly $1,000 more than what we pay now. There are numerous reasons why it is more expensive, but even so. And the funny thing is when I commented it was $1,000 more than what we are paying now, the guy says, no, it's only $900 and odd more..........oh please!!!!

I also called to see how much the phone, Internet and satellite was going to cost and guess what that is also more expensive. So I am wondering what on earth people are talking about when they say it is cheaper to live in the country, as so far everything is going to cost us more? So please correct me on this, and tell me how living in the country is going to be cheaper, I'm all ears!!!

Saving money on your food bill, part 1............

I mentioned last week that I would do more posts on different ways to save money, so I figured we'd start with the food bill. I think most people who want to cut back, the first place they do it is with the weekly food/grocery bill. This will be a multiple post series, as there is too much information to put in one post.

Now everyone is different and everyone has different priorities when it comes to food shopping. For example, some families are huge meat eaters, some families eat organic foods, in some households, there may only be just the two of you, in others there may be 6 of you, but the basic principles that I am going to try to explain apply to everyone.

First of all saving money just doesn't happen, you have to work at it, and that in itself takes some time. For those of you who don't have a spare minute to yourself, you are going to have to work even harder at this to succeed, but succeed you will. There is method to this madness that I am going to have you go through, and doing this step by step will work.

The very first thing you need to do is set an hour or so aside to make a full inventory of what you have in your freezer, fridge and pantries, because despite how organized you feel you may be, I bet there are very few people out there that know exactly what they have in there fridge, freezer or pantry. Now if you do well done, you are a heck of a lot better organized than I am. I write down on a scrap of paper, what I have where, don't use a new piece of paper, that would be wasteful.

Now if you have word or excel on your computer, make up a spreadsheet of what you have where. If you don't know how to do that, write it out by hand indicating what you have and what quantity. I post my sheets on the front of my fridge where I can see it, you may want to keep it elsewhere. Here is a photo of my sheet.

Now the first thing you notice, is that I only have a list made up of my upstairs and downstairs freezers. Those are my "trouble spots" as far as I am concerned. I put things in the freezers only for them to re-surface months later with a bad case of freezer burn. I haven't got around to doing my pantry inventory yet, and I won't be doing a one for the fridge (I'll explain why later.)

So now you have those lists made up, the first thing you will probably notice you have bits and bobs of things and maybe multiple of other things....am I right? As an example, I have 5 breaded chicken fingers, 2 English muffins, a couple of pita breads, so I am going to make an odds and ends meal with a little of this and a little of that to use up these odds and ends.

To do that though would mean I would have to make a menu plan up, right? That is the number two thing that is key to saving money on your food bill. Now in Canada and the States the grocery stores bring out weekly flyer's telling you what's on sale or on special that week. I will say I have no idea what the rest of the world does? I am sure though all stores throughout the world have weekly specials?

Personally for me, I get my flyer's on a Friday night, I go through them and see what's on sale or whats on special that week. I am fortunate that I have all the major grocery stores all within a few kilometres from where we live. If however I only had the one store I would have to shop their specials only.

So by looking at what I have in the house, and seeing what is on special that week, I am able to make up a weekly grocery list. I mentioned earlier I do not need to do a list for my fridge, the reason behind that is that I buy produce and dairy products weekly. I also only buy what I know we can use before it expires. That seems like a simple point, but often you are drawn to those fancy dancy displays in the grocery stores and impulse buy. Which is all well and good if its a can of soup, but when its something that will only keep for a week, you really need to think twice about purchasing it, as there is nothing worse than having to throw out food, you may as well have thrown your money down the drain. That is why doing a weekly menu plan is so important.

Now so far we have probably spent a couple of hours doing your inventory and making a menu plan for the week. Now the thing is, once your inventory plan is done, that doesn't need to be re-done for a few weeks, as you can make changes right on the list you have put on the fridge. When it gets to the point you can't make head nor tale of what's going on, then it needs to be re-done. So on a week to week basis, your main time commitment is going to be planning your menu and looking through the flyer's, if you get them. Most grocery stores have web sites and they all have their flyer's online.

Everyone has different budgets for their groceries, and what is good for one doesn't mean it will be good for another. I know I try to keep my budget down to $300 a month, which is for me and dh. In that budget I include all toiletries, cleaning supplies, paper products and all food. Basically if you can buy it in a grocery store or pharmacy its part of my budget. If we had pets I would include pet food and if we had babies, I would be including diapers and baby formula.

Now I know some families that feed their families on less than the $300 a month, but for us it's the best I can do at the moment. I try to spend $75 a week, some weeks its more, some weeks its less. One thing I do, do is I stock up on things that we use and are on sale. For example, the other week one store had I Can't Believe It's Not Butter on sale for 99 cents. Normally its between $1.99 to $2.49. I bought 8 tubs, as I know that its generally on sale somewhere every couple of months or so. I saved $8 there, it will last the two months and I have room in my fridge to store it. If it only lasted a week, I would have only bought one. If I only had a tiny fridge I would have only bought a couple. I took these things into account before I bought them.

I also buy reduced meat and pop it straight into the freezer. There is generally nothing wrong with it, other than its due to expire in a day or two's time, so why pay full price for it? The only thing I would be careful about, is check how much it is per kilo or per pound, as sometimes even when its reduced you can still buy it cheaper when it comes on sale. I also buy from the reduced produce section, especially banana's, apples and pears. I make pear and apple sauce for dh's lunch and use the banana's for banana bread.

One thing you need to know is your prices. Some people have price books that they make up to tell them how much a good price for certain items are. I have been around for a while (40 + years) that I generally have a good idea if things are expensive or cheap. If you're not sure then by all means write things down.

Coupons.........I use them for certain things, however I am getting away from using them as I try to make more things from scratch. One thing I do, do though is call manufacturers or email them to tell them if I have had a problem with one of their products or really like their products. More often than not they send you coupons for their products. So if its something you use all the time anyhow, getting coupons for that product is a bonus.

So this is it for this week. I need you to make up an inventory of what you have food wise in your house, and make a menu plan. Next week I'll have more tips on how to save money on food.

Spoke too soon........

Not feeling well at all.  It is a sinus/head cold thing I have going on. (((SIGH)))  Will be back later on in the week, hopefully!  😰😩😩
