Bucket list item........

One thing on my bucket list is to go on a cruise.   However I know diddly squat about cruising.  I would love to do the Alaska one leaving from Vancouver I think.  I am open to a Northern European one as well.  I will say it's not on hubby's list at all to cruise; but he'll go just to keep me happy!!!

So I am open for any suggestions about this.  I would prefer to pay in Canadian Dollars if we could.  Which cruise line is the best?  What time of year is best to go; as I don't want to be eaten to death with bugs (on the Alaskan cruise).  We are looking at 2026 for this.  Is a balcony room better than a window room?  I don't drink alcohol, but I am sure hubby would enjoy a glass of wine with his meal.  Are excursions worth the price?

So any and all suggestions and tips very welcome with this.

I love ❤️ the ocean 💙 and would love to go on a cruise ship 🚢 but I have never done it. You will get different opinions on this from those who have. I hope you find a good one and are able to go and enjoy a cruise.

I love to cruise. I’ve been on two and would love to do more.
I’ve had a balcony and a just a view room. I’d definitely pay the extra for a balcony. If there is a gastro outbreak or any flu, you will be asked to stay in your room while you recover. A balcony will be very welcome on that occasion. I had gastro so I had to stay in my room for twenty for hours after the last time I had vomited. The balcony was a great place to sit and get some air

I've not been on a cruise, so can't offer any suggestions. My daughter has been on one though and mentioned that they offer a drink package, where you pay a certain price ahead of time, and then you have unlimited drinks on the ship.

The only cruise I would ever be intereted in would be the one up the BC coast, but at this point it's not going to be doable. Sorry I can't be of any help!

Did a Viking river cruise just before Covid. Wouldn't go on a Viking again. Maybe a different line. Very American, very cliquish. Limited activities. My pal who did a lot of cruising was really disappointed in the lack of evening entertainment.

If you like smaller ships Fred Olsen out of the UK does Baltic cruises as well as Med cruises. Never more than 1300 on those ships. Balcony cabins are very pricey and we did fine with a window.

Now, drinks packages are stupidly expensive. I'm teetotal and the husband has a beer with supper. Most lines will charge around $70/day. You both have to pay. Viking does provide beer and wines with meals. As do all the other river cruises.

The ships that go to Alaska are huge 2500+ people. Your best value is a repositioning cruise. That's when they chage the ships around for the season. Did a reposition cruise years ago. The Motor Association travel agency was booking them. Three nights in Vegas, bus to San Diego and then a cruise up the west coast to Vancouver. I learnt never to cruise with my mother on that one.

Noro can hit any cruise ship. It all comes down to your hand hygiene.

I have been a a lot of cruises and several different cruise lines, but, that was a long time ago. Late hubby and I did an Alaska cruise with Holland America, and enjoyed it. The inside passage is not rough water either. DD2 and hubby on going on one next month she is going Norwegian. The best cruise I have ever taken was down the Danube. Less than 150 passengers, no rough water, stops right at the front door, so to speak, for every town on their list of stops. We had a different wine in every region we sailed through. Recommend for a first time cruiser.
After going on a river cruise I think the number of passengers on a sea cruise over 2000 and up to 3500 or more would turn me off.

A waitress that I know who also lives here in Montreal told me that she and her husband have taken two cruises so far on the Carnival Cruise 🛳 Line. She said they really enjoyed it.

I always told my husband that if he booked me a cruise I'd know he was trying to kill me! I don't like the thought of being on water.
I think the only one I'd do would be an Alaskan Cruise. I really would try to overcome the water fear to see Alaska!

My husband really wants to go on a cruise, but I'm wary of it as he has a severe food allergy. The thought of him being affected and needing to use his epipens on board a ship terrifies me. My niece is a fitness influencer and was gifted a cruise. My sister in law went with her and they had a great time.
