Antiques.......

and no I am not referring to me and dh!!  We went for a drive on Sunday afternoon to relax from a stressful morning sitting in a walk-in clinic full of sick people!!!

We called into an antique store that I had been wanting to visit since we moved up here and saw a beautiful Oak China Cabinet.  However the price on it said $1,200 firm.  There was a chair beside it I quite liked so I asked what the price of that was and the lady told me.  I said however I really love the china cabinet but can't afford it.

She went on to tell me it's a 1905 McLagan quarter cut oak China Cabinet and she would give it to me for $700.  Now for someone to drop the price by $500 just like that without me even asking for a price reduction makes me wonder.  However they are selling the store, that I do know for a fact and she has to clear everything out.

I said I wanted to do some more research on the piece as I had never ever heard of the McLagan company from Stratford, Ontario.  I didn't see any markings on the piece to indicate it was a McLagan, but you could tell it was an old piece.

We did go to another Antiques place and there were a couple of pieces there that were similar priced and as nice.  I picked up the card of one guy so gave him a call and he was very helpful.  Now I didn't tell him this piece was in a store, but what information he did tell me from my description of the piece was at auction he would pay somewhere between $295 to $400 and a fair price to pay would be $500.  So now I am thinking about the situation.

I may call the woman and tell her I will offer her $500 cash; which I know she won't accept right off.  Though if I give her my name and number and tell her to call me if she has had no other takers before the store closes for good.  I have nothing to lose and I won't feel as though I have overpaid for the item.

Once thing I would love to learn more about is Depression Glass  I have three pieces of green that were my Nana's, so treasure them because they were hers.

I love that sort of thing and I really enjoy the vibrancy of Carnival Glass

I need to read up on both these types of items before I go out and collect them.  The one good thing about both those types of glassware they don't cost an arm and a leg to buy.....yet!!

Do you collect anything?  If so what?  I'd love to hear all about it.

Dh's eyes look a heck of a lot better, so I guess the drops are working.

Good luck with the bargaining. I've always wanted to collect antiques but two things stopped me (a) the cost and (b) the husband. Oh well, maybe one day...

Sounds like a sensible thing to do regarding the cabinet- I have bought a few bits of carnival glass from charity shops and car boots they look really effective displayed all together and can be picked up quite cheaply-love the green jug !

Gill, have you been to any proper farm auctions yet??? Great deals to be had and so much fun, a lovely day out for you and dh. We often pack a picnic, bring a couple of lawn chairs and make a day out of it. Most auctions have housewares and furniture for the "better half" of the couple and tools, building supplies etc for the guy so everybody's happy.

Hope you get your china cabinet...sounds lovely. I love depression glass too...

Hi there...saw this auction of carnival glass you might be interested in: http://www.auctionsfind.com/auction/7081. It is in Dundas, Ontario, so maybe if you are up for another drive.

Yes, I collect Rupert Annuals, especially liking the ones I had when I was a child (last week!). I may do a post on it because yours has inspired me!
I think the lady antique dealer wanted to go home with some money in her pocket. Sometimes they will sell at more or less any reasonable price just to shift the piece and have something in the purse.
If you want it, buy it. You'll regret it if you don't, WON'T YOU!

Do I collect anything? Not really, but I do have several antiques that have been past on to me from family. My Mother gave me my great grandfathers 24 hour clock. As a child I remember it sitting on his mantel. She also gave me a round dining room table that was in her home, when she was a child, she will be 94 this year. She had both of these items shipped from England several years ago. I also have a bow front china cabinet that was my Mother in Law's.

I did collect roosters...now I don't collect anything. Not in the way you mean. But I do have a huge fabric stash, if that counts.

But I love looking at antiques. I love them, but don't have room for them.

Great fun! I love antiquing, especially at auctions! I used to sell a lot that I bought, and wish I'd kept a few real beauties! I'm a bit more selective now about what I buy and what I get rid of.

Hi Gill!

I'm playing catch up with my blogs now that I'm home from Toronto :o)

I'm glad to hear that dh is feeling better. Those glass pieces you have are all lovely, I really like the carnival glass as well!

As for collecting, I have quite a large collection of knick-knacks from all over the world that were brought back from various family members who went on trips and that I also received at special occasions like birthdays, my first communion and confirmation. I'm scaling back on buying any more though as I have no more place to put them on my bookcase and fireplace mantel :o)
