20 years later.........

So this photo is out of focus on purpose; before anyone says something.

These are my money boxes.  I put money in each one each week.  The largest box is my Christmas box and $20 goes into that one.  The smallest one is the birthday box, and $20 goes into that one each week.

The one in the middle has our daughter's name on it and the word birthday.  I set these boxes up 20 years ago to save money for Christmas and birthday's, and as our daughter was turning 21 the following year I put money away each week in the middle sized box to give her money on her 21st birthday to set up an RRSP account.  Our daughter turns 40 this year in November, so I have had these boxes in my drawer doing the same old thing each week for 20 years now.  I have never bothered to change the name on the middle box.  I still save money in it each week and it generally gets used as spending money for our vacation, or if we need cash for something.  For example we had our driveway sealed a couple of weeks ago and they wanted cash, in fact $220 worth of cash, which to my mind was expensive?  However it looks good!

We do have a son and we gave him money also for his 21st birthday for RRSP's.  In the UK 18th and 21st birthday's are a big deal.  I know we gave the kids money also for their 18th birthday.

Last year our son turned 40 and this year, our daughter-in-law, son-in-law and daughter all turn 40.  It just seems like yesterday that they were all teenagers.  Our son-in-law has been "in the family" since he was in his early teens, as has our daughter-in-law.  Looking back time has certainly flown by fast.

As for the grand-kids, the youngest one turned 4 in June and the oldest one will be 12 in November.  It just seems like yesterday when they were new born's in our arms.

A stroll down memory lane for me today!

What a lovely story. And I can see how much these boxes mean to you. They represent great memories from the past.

You are so right Pat it won't be long until they start university........I was just talking about that with our daughter and was saying we will give them gift cards to grocery stores, rather than cash in hand, so it actually goes to something useful!!

I will be using them for the rest of my days I would reckon, Linda.

When I use our PC points at the grocery store, I come home and put the money away in a jar. Usually have around $600 towards the vacation spending money.

I've been mostly off work all summer, so not saving a lot. But school starts in a month and I'll be back at it.

I think it's wonderful how you're thinking of your kids and grandkids all the time and putting money aside for them. Sweet tradition.
It can be really nice to have that bit of extra for sure.

What a lovely idea to use boxes for saving. I am afraid I put all my savings in an envelope which gets rather tattered after a bit of usage. Change is stuck in jars and used for my husband's family reunion which happens every second year. I usually have enough to pay for the cabin, purchase food for our stay, and bid on the silent auction items.

God bless.

What a lovely story. I really need to do something like that. I rarely have cash these days but I'm thinking about using it more as I feel as though I watch what I spend when I only have cash on me. It's far too easy just to scan the card.

Thanks for sharing this memory!

This is a good idea. I do something similar in my bank account with sub-accounts for Gifts, Cat, Cottage, Taxes, Art Supplies, Emergency Savings. With every paycheck I get, I throw money into each account and it can build to quite a bit. Then I don't have to dig through "life expenses" money when a birthday or holiday comes along, or property taxes, or vet care. Your boxes are much prettier than my bank!

Wouldn't it be interesting to know just how much you managed to save in those boxes over the years. Wonderful story!

Tasty meal

Made these veggie burgers the other night.  I buy the veggie burgers from Costco and the burger buns from Zehrs, which is a PC store.  Tho...
